This was the very first of Harris’ book with the character of Hannibal being shaped and presented to the readers. While Hannibal is a mere supporting character, he accentuates the talent of the main character (Will Graham) in his ability to project and visualize the mind of the insane/schizophrenic villain. A faithful adoption by the movie version, it nevertheless provides thrills to the reader all the way to the surprising ending. Harris’ writing style is more on the characters and their inner thoughts than their surroundings like other authors. In my opinion, the plot is probably the best among the four Hannibal fictions.

Not enough of Dr Lecter. Red Dragon was kinda bland as a serial killer, and Graham was just so so. Never liked Chilton and Crawford. I think the whole series is better read in an orderly fashion. For me, starting out with the later ones was a wrong move.

No matter how you cut it - gory, violent, twisted - you can't deny that the dude can WRITE. Harris is so incredibly knowledgeable in the topics he broaches in this book and is specific in how the investigations are conducted, how they derive information from clues, even psychological analyses. The book is pretty disturbing and violent at times, but I think that those scenes are necessary to accurately portray the urges and mind of a serial killer. I can't handle gore, so I skimmed some parts, but Harris is a MASTER at plot and character development, and reveals a piece of each character throughout the book, stringing the reader along so not everything about a character is revealed at once. FANTASTIC writer.

I have read this book before but i decided to come back and read it again this book is the first of the hannibal lecture book's i want to see the movie and see what the dragon looks like in the movie Thomas harris is good but i like stephen king better because you know what your gonna get by reading all of the stephen king books but thomas harris is ok i was freaked out when i read this book the very first time it kept me up all night I couldn't put it down even when i wanted to put it down so if u like stephen king then u might like thomas harris

Despite being pretty old, this story had me up throughout the night, with my nose buried in the novel. lavishly told. painfully scary (at least for me).
