Fantastic book and the best of the first three. This book is a lot darker than the previous two and sees the introduction of Sirius and Lupin, alongside the dreadful dementors. A more complex story which revels a lot more of what really happened to Harrys parents the night they died. Well done Ms Rowling.

My very favorite book of the series. It is dark, there is mystery, and Hogwarts is shown as vulnerable. Though Harry has encountered the wrath of Voldemort three times before this book, and he has dealt with the evil and hatred of others, in this book he has to face his own demons and anger. Harry's struggle with his own anger is well written and exciting. Though you know Harry is a good person, he still is a person who also has a lot of anger and hurt stored up. I enjoyed reading about Harry as a regular person who gets so mad at the thought of betrayal and his parents' murders he wants to reciprocate. A stunning read.

This is othe only Harry Potter book so far that has actually captivated me. I love the characters of Lupin and Dumbledore the most. Prisoner definitely held my attention the entire time and would make me think. There were some plot twists that I did not see, but overall the book constantly kept me guessing. Rowling did a great job in this third installment. It is interesting, adventurous, and comical. Readers of all ages will enjoy the 3rd HP book. As usual, Dumbledore comes up with some awesome quotes that we can all live by. Definitely read this one!!

J.K. Rowlings third book in the Harry Potter series has definitely not lost that special humor, wit, kindness, and excitement that the first two books provided. What we get in addition is even more magical details and surprising mysteries that we never thought were there. What this book provides that the other books did not is the realization that there is true darkness coming to the kids and yet not without hope. It also brings the characters to the realization that growing up also means realizing that everything you thought was true is something completely different and those that you think you couldn't or could trust becomes quite the opposite.

This is final chapte rin what I like to call the "overture" of the war story of the HP series. The final ingredients of Voldmort's rise to power which were hinted at so tantalizngly in the previous books are bearing fruit. JKR pulls no punches. The discovery of Sirius' secret, the writing of Professor Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, and the fate of Buckbeak helped make this the most suspenseful of the series so far. There is also some neat tension between Ron and Hermoine that gives their characters needed dimension as well as some necessary backstory on some of the background characters. That JKR would devote her time to delineating such seemingly inconsequential characters for the greater good of the whole story makes this series truly something special. The conclusion is also heartwarming and gives Harry a chance to breathe in his oh-so-tormented life.

HP book 3 is my favorite of all 7 books because it really shows the gang growing up. I also enjoyed it because we get to see some very raw emotion as Harry finds out that the man he thought sold his parents out to you know who but really didn't and turns out to be Harry's god father. Sirus wants Harry to live with him as soon as things calm down and Harry for the first time has something to really look forward to in the future.

I'm only on the third book in the Harry Potter series, I know. The seventh and final book came out this summer and I'll eventually get to it, I'm sure. Like the first two books, I'm really enjoying this one. Harry is in his third year at Hogwarts and is avoiding the sick-kick of his arch enemy, Lord Voldemort. This side-kick, Sirius Black, has escaped Azkaban Prison and is supposedly out to get Harry. I expected a twist and I got one. All of the characters are back and J.K. Rowling weaves them into the story seamlessly. She's really a great writer. I don't know when I'll get to the last 4 books, but I will sooner or later. Right now, I have to watch the third Harry Potter Movie.

There is something about the character of Sirius Black that has always been interesting to me. And here we finally get to see him in flesh and blood and hear his story of the night Voldemort fell 12 years ago. A lot of people will say that Goblet of Fire is when the books get darker but to me this is where the story really starts to grow up and where Jo throws some mystery in that will haunt us until book 7. In fact, looking back on the series as a whole some of it may have even been happening in book 2. To me it is sort of like how I think about the Beatles. A lot of people say that they started changing/evolving their sound with Rubber Soul. But I tend to think that it was happening, or at least transitioning earlier, with Help! Anyway, its a good read. Check it out (with the others of course)...

Once again, a good book. Regarding my continuing critique of the objections to this series, this one did supply another possible complaint--Harry's Divination class. I know my parents wouldn't have been thrilled with at least the first section of that when I was younger...but in the end, I have to come to the conclusion that this too is an empty objection. Even the other teachers acknowledge that Divination rarely works. In fact, when the professor goes all exorcist and makes what appears to be a REAL prediction of the future, Dumbledore says that that makes two in her whole life, and that now he might have to give her a raise! Anyway, hooked now more than ever, and I sincerely hope that Lupin and Black continue to appear in the series. I liked those characters....

Thirteen year-old Harry Potter has reluctantly spent yet another summer with the Dursleys, his dismal relatives, "behaving himself" and not practicing any magic. That is, until Uncle Vernon's bullying sister, Aunt Marge, comes to visit. Aunt Marge has always been particularly horrible to Harry and this time pushes him so far that he "accidentally" causes her to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift away! Fearing punishment from his Aunt and Uncle--and repercussions from Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic, which strictly forbids students from using magic in the non-magic world--Harry escapes into the night. Along the way, Harry will try to make sense of Hermioneâ??s puzzling appearances and disappearances, with the help of Ron and the giant Hagrid, who has taken on a new position at Hogwarts as the Care of Magical Creatures teacher. A confrontation between Harry and the menacing Sirius Black seems inevitable, but what exactly is Professor Lupinâ??s relationship with Black? What is the dark secret that Professor Snape is so eager to reveal? And just why is Ronâ??s pet rat Scabbers so frantic to escape his grasp? Harry will need all of the courage, magic and support he can muster to answer these questions and uncover the truth behind Sirius Black and his ties to the gifted young wizardâ??s mysterious past.

Since pretty much everyone I know has read these books, I figurere viewing them is pretty pointless. But with the new book coming out in a couple of weeks, I have to go through them beginning to end. To make the reviews more entertaining, I will be doing them in a variety of unexpected formats. For this review, I will be writing as Crookshanks fan fiction.

Crookshanks swished his tail back and forth as he crept up the stairs to the boys' bedrooms. He knew the rat wasn't what it was pretending to be, but all of his attempts to alert the humans to this fact had failed. "I don't know why I even bother," he muttered to himself. "I could get along fine without any of them. Let the rat do whatever it is it's trying to do. So long as Girl keeps feeding me and scratching my belly, I'll - hello, what's this?"

He could smell the rat. Its scent was like nothing Crookshanks had ever smelled, and for all his time living in a magical pet shop, he'd smelled a lot. The rat did smell like a rat, yes, but there was also something else. Something... human. It was just like that big black dog he'd met on the grounds the other day. Every instinct in him had screamed to run away, but there was that smell. And even Crookshanks knew what they said about cats and curiosity. The dog had turned out to be more than just a dog, and it had convinced Crookshanks to help it. First order of business: retrieve a certain rat from the bedroom of the Red-Haired Boy.

The Boy wasn't in, but the rat was. Crookshanks circled the bed a few times. This time, maybe, he would be able to get the damn thing. He tensed for a moment and then leapt onto the bed.

By luck or skill, he was nearly on top of the thing when he landed. "A-HA!" he yowled. "Gotcha!" He pinned the rat under his sizable paw. "Where you gonna run to now, ratty?" he asked, sneering as best he could.

The rat writhed in his grip. "Please," it said. "Just let me go. You don't know what will happen if you eat me, it would be a terrible mistake!"

"A mistake, eh?" the cat said. "We'll see about that. I have a great big doggie friend who's just aching to get his jaws around you...."

He barely had time to finish his sentence when the rat went mad. It squealed and bit and slashed with its paws. And then, against all of Crookshanks' previous experience - it grew! It nearly threw the cat off the bed as it became much more massive - its legs lengthened and its arms stretched until it had reached a human size and shape. Crookshanks goggled. Of all the things he'd expected from this rat, this wasn't it. The human grabbed at him, but Crookshanks was too fast. He jumped off the bed and shimmied under the wardrobe, where he could see but not be seen.

The human looked around, breathing heavily. He was pale and thin, and still looked ratty. "Think, Peter, think," he said. "Gotta get out of here, but..." He stopped, glanced at the wardrobe, and grimaced. "You may just have given me my way out, cat," he said. And then he bit the ball of his hand.

Blood dripped out, leaving spreading red blotches on the sheets. "They'll think it was you," he said. "They'll leave me for dead and I'll be free to rejoin my Lord." He looked at the recently repaired curtains on Ron's bed. "It's not safe here anymore." He sucked at the wound to stop the bloodflow and then went to the window. Perched on the windowsill, he looked over at Crookshanks' hiding place. "If I were human," he said, "the fall would kill me. But as a rat...." His body rippled and twisted and shrank, and then there was an old grey rat on the sill. Crookshanks was pretty sure it winked at him before leaping off.

After a minute or two, Crookshanks wriggled out from under the wardrobe, his thoughts dark. The Red-Haired Boy was going to be angry, and so was the Girl. But more importantly, the Dog was going to be furious. It was barely holding on to its sanity as it was. Crookshanks shook his head. This was going to get worse before it would get better....

6/09. Started reading this to my daughter, like we had done with the previous two (5 y/o son stopped listening, too much for him just yet)... however, this book was the best one yet, and I ended up reading ahead by myself. I was going to go back and read with my daughter, but she really got into it as well and read pretty much the whole thing to herself. Yay for her! I thought that was pretty good for a 7 year old. Movie was great, too. Darker than the first two (different director), but also better. This movie got to be a bit much for my son as well, so he may need to stop altogether until he's older. Requested #4 from the library right away! :)

There are so many reasons to like the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling... A lot of us ended up with families that never really understood us, families that piled senseless obligations on us as punishment for merely being who we are. Later in life, we find out there are places for everyone, and even though it may not be easy... well, lets just say these books touched me. I feel the whole 'magic' thing was just a scapegoat used by religious nuts to persecute these fine novels. The family Harry Potter has to endure is a lot like many "proper" families who only look good on the surface, but when you see how badly they treat those whom they dislike you realize their facade means nothing... okay, I'm rambling and this review sucks... If you haven't read Harry Potter (age DOES NOT matter) buy the series and read!

Generally this book is okay, though labeled as worst of all seven, bcause there was no He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and it seemed all too incredible that "out popped a godfather labeled as serial killer of the Magical World of Harry". But Sirius Black played an important role in Potter's life in later books, so I guess there's still some use for him. Except that how he turned from a serial killer to an understanding godfather in Harry's eyes, I had no idea. It was a short abrupt turn which is logical. Anyway, I got to like Sirius in the progress, so I guess he's okay, but I still don't like the sound of the plot without a single Voldemort's footsteps, though he was rumoured to have escaped to Albania, I still think he should have appeared. Somewhere. And I hated when Lupin retired from his post. He shouldn't, though it was wonderfully responsible of him he did. Ouch. I sound so cynical and skeptical.

Well, not to be too much of a broken record, but this book was also my favorite in the Harry Potter series thusfar. The marauders are a very nice addition in the series, and have naturally made for some very interesting fanfiction. Half of me hopes that when Rowling is finished with Harry, she goes and does some of the marauders backstory, because I really cannot get enough of the trickstery Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail, and Prongs. Of course, that would probably be deemed too much like Star Wars.... This book is one of two in the series where Harry does not actually battle Voldemort to his face, which is a nice touch and changes things up a bit. I personally prefer that. The dementors are interesting characters, and Draco really goes out of his way trying to make trouble for Harry in parts, which just makes me laugh. I have read this probably fifty times realistically, and every time I discover something new. Probably Rowling's strongest work, in a general sense.

Mystery! Harry Potter and company really get down to business in this 3rd outing. You can tell Rowling had secured a contract to write the full series before penning this novel because Azkaban consists mostly of back story concerning Harry's parents' relationship with titular Prisoner Sirius Black. Really cool, really interesting back story, which is good, because Potter nemesis of the first order Lord Voldemort does not make an appearance here. That doesn't mean there lacks a marked villain - Rowling introduces the ghostly, goul-like Dementors to torture Harry instead. Rowling has truly gotten her Potter-speak down pat by now and is turning verbal cartwheels in Wizard-ish. Lots of double speak here, so thinking adults shouldn't be surprised when they anticipate the twists before Potter does. But it shouldn't detract from their enjoyment of Azkaban. Best new character: Remus Lupin

This is one of my favorite Harry Potter books. I don't know why it just eeme that everyone was more involved and included in this one. I rather think that this book must have taken a great deal of time or no time at all because it seems like great ideas are either hard to get down on paper or really easy.

this is my favorite potter book.
i don't know what my second is but i am sure most of the rest are close on this ones heels.
many things happen in this book and many characters are introduced.
i almost consider this a better introduction to the series than sorcerer's stone.
Rowling i have to say really starts to shine as a story teller in this one.
there is an undertone of bitterness and anger to the book
very much unlike what i consider the relatively innocent and childlike first 2 volumes.
Sirius black is akin to Tolkien's nazgul.
in which they are both a distant threat growing ever larger
while the plot thickens.
Remus lupin is a gem, i found it was high time that harry had gotten a decent d.a.d.a teacher and unfortunately he would
really be the last. (you may think the one in the fourth book is
but just you wait and read)
his character is the apothesis of wit and sincerity and it really
lightens up this otherwise dark and brooding tale.
some characters barely get a few pages. some that i really like.
Minerva Mcgonagall who in most of the other novels is a fairly
important secondary character, gets about 10 lines i think in
the whole book.
professor dumbledore remains as mysterious and guarded as
ever.
though his seeming hatred for the dementors guarding his school.
gets quite a bit of study.

this is pretty much the best potter book. tied perhaps only
with the final installment "harry potter and the deathly hallows"
pretty much all the characters in this book are here to stay.
and the ones that were introduced all serve great purpose later
on.
but i urge you try not to think of this series as long book.
because if you merge them all together
you will probably lose the magic of it all.

i hope this helped you.

These are the books that started my reading journey. J.R. Rowling is by far one of the best authors in the world. Thank you for giving me inspiration to read and write.

These books are written to grow with children as they grow up in years. They start off innocent enough, but become darker as you farther in the series. Even Adults can get into this book, creating a world that doesn't exist, and sparking an imagination beyond reason. I would recommend these books to anyone who loves a visit away from reality every once in a while, and if you dont' know what these books are about, what rock have you been living under.

my favorite, by far, of the books [even though i haven't finished reading them yet]. i can't count the number of things i liked about this one above the rest, one of the most pleasing differences i think being that for once voldemort didn't force an appearance [something that i think could have been avoided in the second book two.... it gets to be pretty predictable, which is why i liked this one so much, for its unpredictability]. the new characters introduced in this story are some of my favorites in the whole series [i guess i should add that i have seen the films, though i usually don't like to do so before i read the books, and i'm looking forward to the bits left out....]. well done, will definitely read again, and probably in the near future....
