Though a bit more predictable than the first book, still completely enjoyable and fun to read.

The violence (and occasional language) is a bit of a shock factor for me in these seemingly young children's books - I can't imagine how to read them aloud to a child in places. Other than that, they have, so far, been stunningly visual and hilarious. The endless number of reptiles in this left me with a big smile - especially the Virginia Wolfsnake, who should never, at any cost, be allowed near a typewriter. A big change I noticed this time around from book one, was that the parenthetical statements (which were used with overabundance in book one and yes, I am being very ironical here, in case you haven't noticed - ironical being that I am doing the very thing which I am here criticizing, which is being parenthetical) were not parenthetical but hyphenated, and used less frequently. I was thankful for that. If Snicket has fine tuned this much from book one to the book of two, I'm interested to see how the rest of the series will go.

I have already noticed the last books are considerably longer - which makes me think somewhere along the way, his editor finally ordered and ate crow.

The second book of the series is just as good as the first one, and even better. I remain a fan of Snicket's morbidity and sarcasm, but in this book you see for the first time how intricate his plot is, and how much he intends to do with it in the following books. I really love the Deadly Viper.

"Acckkphaw!" said Sunny. Which in this case means continuously unfortunate and event filled. If you liked the first book, you will like this one.

It was great at first but then it started getting repitive, annoying and patronising. Yet I still couldn't put it down, I had to find out where the Baudelauire kids will be next. The first few in the series are the best. The ending was ambigious, not exactly how I wanted it to end but it does inspire to try and write it differently...
It was fun at first but it started getting boring, repeitive and patronising.

This is a delightful sequel to the original book that carries the poor little Baudelaires to a very different setting than before, with another bizarre relative who happens to be much more caring and loving than Count Olaf.

While this book does not yet reveal the series' main plot, it's a fantastic, imaginative, and strangely touching story all by itself with Lemony Snicket's biting word play and matter-of-fact writing that sets a surprising mood all by itself.

People, these books are deeper than they appear, and the author is amazing at getting to the heart and soul of a story in so few words.

 Reviewed by Me for TeensReadToo.com

As the Baudelaire children--Violet, Klaus, and Sunny--narrowly escape the marriage scheme of Count Olaf and his theatre troupe of THE BAG BEGINNING, we pick up with Mr. Poe once again leading the children to the home of another relative. Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, a revered member of the Herpetological Society, is a man who has spent his life studying snakes. As the children arrive at his home, via Lousy Lane, they are at first leary of "Uncle Monty" and his REPTILE ROOM. They soon learn, however, that their newfound Uncle is a kind man, providing them each with their own room and entertaining activities that they each enjoy--space and materials to invent for Violet, books and a reading nook for Klaus, and plenty of biting material for Sunny.

As the orphans settle in to their new abode, Uncle Monty teaches them about snakes, most especially his new discovery, the Incredibly Deadly Viper. As we learn that said snake is a misnomer--the word "misnomer" here meaning "a wrong name"--the children become excited about the upcoming trip to Peru to study new snake life. Unfortunately, as most everything in the lives of the Baudelaire children is, Uncle Monty's new assistant, Stefano, is no other than Count Olaf in disguise.

Alas, just as with their previous adventures, no one listens to the children's concerns until it is too late. As Stefano aka Count Olaf threatens the children into silence, he begins to hatch his evil plan, which includes getting rid of the snake-loving doctor and absconding to Peru with the children, where he can wait for Violet to come of age, grab her fortune, and dispose of the children.

Saved in the nick of time--yet again--by a convoluted series of events, we find the children once again looking for a kind relative to care for them. As THE REPTILE ROOM ends, Mr. Poe drives off into the sunset with a miserable Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, and we wait to see which new series of unfortunate events will befall the children.

Another quick read, THE REPTILE ROOM is highly recommended depending on the maturity of your child. Another dark tale of misery and woe, this book is highly entertaining for those who understand that it's fiction.
