So much better than Harry Potter. Depth of the universe Garth Nix has created is unbelievably 3D (although that may be limiting it unfairly, 5 or 6D?). Books progressively get better and better.

Sort of dreamy in not the best way, such as creatures appearing and disappearing possessing arbitrary traits: there are no underlying rules to the fantasy order of this universe. Also, kinda contextually violent, besides, a man being tortured and enslaved and having his eyes ripped out daily, the main character kid is practically dying from asthma attacks all the way through, which I find sort of disturbing in a kid's book. (Although, not as sado masochistic as the underwood chronicles series is, so there are far worse children's books out there.) I felt no emotional investment in any of the characters as they aren't that well rounded.

This books makes me highly suspect low quality adult science fiction keeps getting dumped into the children's market.

This starts very well, with the main character almost dying straight away. Plagues and infections are running riot in Arthur Penhaligan's home town, and his terrible asthma causes him to collapse during PE. The terrible Mister Monday takes him into The House, which is the real world. Our world is just a Secondary Realm. Arthur must rescue the first part of the Will of the Architect and get the first key from Mister Monday. This will ensure that his friends and family back home are safe from the plagues.

Book one in the Keys to the Kingdom series.

Arthur Penhaligon is an unlikely hero. On his first day at a new school, he has a severe asthma attack while attempting to keep up with his classmates while they run during gym class. He collapses and overhears two mysterious strangers discussing a key and his imminent death. He awakes, to find a key in his pocket.

Arthur survives the asthma attack and Mister Monday, disappointed, begins to wreak havoc in Arthur's world as he attempt to reclaim the key. Can Arthur stop Mister Monday before a plague destroys all that he loves?

A wonderfully written novel that sucks the reader in. Not only does it incorporate many myths, but it also displays an exotic world with fantasy creatures not found in another faerie tale.

I've read all the books in this series so far, and this is the perfect start to it. What amazes me is the unique plot (especially the idea of using the days of the week in it :P). Many of the characters are likable (Suzy, Arthur, and Leaf). I would recommend this book to ages 9+, but anyone could probably enjoy it.

more of a book for children as opposed to being an adult fantasy book. It centres on a kid. So you'd expect it to be a "boy finds he has power and saves the day" kinda book and you'd be right.

It has frequent action in it too peak your interest throuought the book. It certainly has me wanting to buy the next in the series which goes from Monday through all of the days of the week.

The story wained a bit in certain places, but on the whole it was a good read.

I didn't care for how neatly everything was resolved at the end of the book. It felt rough and insubstantial; however, the rest of the book more than made up for it. I can't wait to read the second book!

The series is much darker than I expected actually. I loved the concept of the House and it's denizens. There is a definate creepiness factor to them all that reminds me of a Tim Burton film. The beautiful coverart was really consistent with the general feeling of the book. I also appreciate the humor Nix weaves throughout the story that helps lighten the mood.

The Keys to the Kingdom is really a very good series. It's geared toward younger readers, about middle to high school, but the rich environments and quirky characters are fun to read about no matter what your age. It also has a little bit of a steam punk feel to it, being as the characters all wear Victorian era dress and most of the machines are clockwork and/or steam powered.

Book one is your typical launching point for the series: you're introduced to the characters, you learn a little bit about their backgrounds and you meet the first of the seven main villains. I like that the book gets right into things with out really dragging it's feet.

Since the books are written for a younger age group they are naturally a quick and easy read. I usually end up reading one or two them while I'm waiting for other books to arrive in the mail.
