What are readers saying about Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (Hardcover)?

Inkheart is a fairy tale for a new generation. The story does not take place in a mythical land, far far away, but has the characters instead come to our grimy, dull world of cars and factories. An interesting concept and one that was taken far. The characters are firmly developed, and Dustfinger stands out as a one with great potential as a literary figure (and one realized in Inkspell). In this, he stays off from the sidelines, his love of his home overwhelming all other qualities. With a fast moving plot and plenty of twists, this 500-page tome hardly feels that heavy. It's a light read, but full of Funke's trademark fantasy.

 Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (2003)
This creative fantasy is full of quirky villains, and magic. Set currently in Italy, it reads like an old tale where Meggie and her father are always trying to escape a villain’s grasp. They harness a magic power that allows them to read characters from books into life when the story is read aloud. Along the way, sympathetic friends are drawn into their adventure and they all work together to battle the most evil of characters with an “inkheart”. The pace seemed slow to me but the author’s creative use of books kept my interest.

I really enjoyed this book. It was magical and fantastical without taking me so far away that I lost touch with the reality of their plight. When I first saw that the movie was coming out, I was excited to take my son to it. After completing the book, I am wary of how some scenes may be depicted and the level of violence and brutality. Should be interesting to see how they fit the book into a PG movie.
I liked this book because of the connection to reading and collecting books. I picked it up because of the movie coming out. I wanted to see how appropriate it would be for my 8 year old. The book is extremely dark with a lot of torture and kidnapping. I'm not planning on taking my 8 year old to the movie and he probably will not read the book for a couple of more years. I am planning on reading the rest of the series, but I imagine it's going to get darker.

My six year old and I are listening to Cornelia Funke's Ink Heart read aloud by Lynn Redgrave. It's an odd choice for a six year old. I'm surprised that she wants to listen, but even more surprised that I'm letting her because it's a truly scary and violent story. But it's so rapturous on the power of books and writing that I can't help feeling it's overall a healthy experience for someone just discovering books. The story is about the power and danger of reading aloud so it needs to be performed by someone awe-inspiring. Lynn Redgrave's voices are brilliant. She reads, and then she reads the characters reading out loud each other's writing. An author is scheduled to be executed by one of his characters and has to rewrite the story to effect his own escape. It has to be read out loud at just the right moment by just the right person.... The modern setting for the novel is convincing yet it works as the way-station for transport in and out of old stories. There's book worship and book burning, evil for evil's sake and evil for art's sake with guest interferences by Tinkerbell and the Steadfast Tin Soldier. We are just getting to the climax, so I don't know how the story ends but I have picked up on a strain of mercy in the storytellers (in Cornelia Funke and her characters) that makes me trust there will be some kind of very gentle conflagration.

I originally read this book back in the day and completely fell in love with the imagination of the plot and the grit of the characters. But with the movie now out, I figured I had better reread the book so I could better whine at the film. I have not yet seen the movie, but once again I am in love with Cornelia Funke's genius and creativity as she makes a thoroughly satisfying story. There is plenty of fantasy, but the adventure takes place in our world (and Ms. Funke seems to have a talent for making a modern-day world suitable for a fairy tale). Things are able to go between book world and our world, and this leads to quite the plot. It's fast-paced and filled to the brim with story and action, which makes it a blast to read. And yet it's the characters that make it all the more endearing for me. This is not what I would call an in-depth character analysis; but Funke goes to the work of making sure each character is real. This is fantastic, classic fantasy. Well-done.

This book is the best book that I have ever read. I wanted to read this again but I don't own a copy. I want a copy!!! It was sad when my sister gave away our only copy because she didn't like it. But that was when I didn't like books. Inkheart showed me how wonderful books are that's why I am reading lots of books now. The books that the bookworms who I live with (sisters) are forcing me to read. Oh, I don't wanna read Harry Potter. I'd rather watch it. Well, anyways, Inkheart is a great book. It really felt like the words were whispering to me as I stroked the book. Even without pictures, I could imagine what had happened clearly but their face was still blurred. I have never broke a book since reading Inkheart, but I used to throw and them a year ago... hahaha... but now, I carefully hold it and I don't eat or drink while reading. I love Inkheart, and I feel like getting a copy right before I finished reading it. I just finished it a week ago, it moved my heart. I almost cried at the end... but I stopped because I knew that my tears can make the book... wet.

One does not fully appreciate the writing of JK Rowling until you attempt to read another book in its genre.

Inkheart is the first book in the same genre that I have read since Deathly Hallows and is a very different book. Perhaps it is because it was originally written in German and does not translate well, but the expert weaving and effortless storytelling that one gets from Harry Potter is not apparent here.

The story is a good one and would have been more enjoyable if it had been better executed. There is so much to work with in terms of bringing characters from other books to life in this one, but either the author was ham-strung to only use characters from which her publishers could get the rights -or- the author chose to limit her palette of characters.

The movement of the story was also slow, cyclical, and at times mundane. Mo gets captured, Meggie goes to rescue him, they escape, Meggie gets captured, Mo goes to rescue her, big climax.

Much is contrived and the story never really takes off. There are several almost-climaxes and at times, the reader is entertained, but it is never to the heights possible or delivered in other books.

Summary: Meggie lives a quiet life with her bookbinder father, until one cruel night Mo reads aloud from a book titled INKHEART, and brings to life the book's evil ruler, Capricorn. The evil which has escaped begins to run amok, and Meggie finds herself in the middle of an adventure , the likes of which she used to only read about. Then, Meggie discovers she has the same talent her father has! This book: Is a "must-have" for children 8-10 or younger who enjoy being read-aloud to. Guaranteed to stir up a desire in them to read, read aloud, or even to write their own books.

I MUST SAY THAT I REALLY ENJOED READING THIS BOOK. I COULD READ IT AGAIN AND AGAIN IT IS A SHAME THAT I HAD TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE LIBRARY. I LOVE READING BOOKS AND I MUST SAY THAT INKHEART IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ITS HAS KNOCKED ALL THE HARRY POTTER BOOKS THAT WERE ALL JOINT FIRST ON MY FAVORITE NOVEL LIST DOWN TO SECOND PLACE. I LOVED THE WHOLE MAGIC OF THE BOOK AND I REALLY NEVER WANTED TO PUT IT DOWN. THE ONLY REASON I HAD TO PUT INKHEART DOWN WAS BECAUSE MY EYES HURT FROM READING. I ADORE THE WHOLE IDEA OF READING PEOPLE IN AND OUT OF STORIES. THE EMOTIONS WERE SO WELL WRITTEN FOR EXAMPLE I REALLY EMPITHIZED WITH DUSTFINGER AND HIS LONGING TO RETURN BACK TO HIS ON WORLD AND THE DETERMONATION HE SHOWED TO RETURN TO IT, DESPITE HIS COWARDICE AND ALSO FARID'S LOVE FOR OUR WORLD AND DUSTFINGER AND HOW HAPPY HE WAS AT BEING WITH DUSTFINGER. I NOW HAVE A LONGING TO READ THE REST OF THE TRILOGY. CORNELIA FUNKE REALLY DOES TRANSPORT YOU TO ANOTHER WORLD I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS PART OF THE STORY IT WAS SO WELL WRITTEN. IM ALSO LOOKING FORWORD TO WATCHING THE MOVIE AND SEE HOW THEY COMPARE. IT IS A GREAT STORY ABOUT A BOOK BY THE SAME TITLE OF THE NOVEL AND HOW CERTAIN CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN READ OUT AND REAL PEOPLE READ IN TO REPLACE THE CHARACTERS THAT CAME OUT. I ALSO LOVE HOW THE AUTHOR OF INKHEART MANAGES TO CHANGE WHAT HAPPENS TO CAPRICORN WHEN THEY DISCOVER MEGGIE HAS HE FATHERS GIFT OF READING PEOPLE OUT AND CAPRICORN WANTS HER TO READ OUT THE SHADOW TO KILL MEGGIES MOTHER WHO WAS READ BACK OUT OF THE STORY BY DARIUS AFTER BEING TRAPPED IN THE BOOK FOR NINE YEARS AFTER BEING READ IN BY MEGGIES DAD MO. IM GLAD THAT THEY WERE REUNITED IN THE END. BUT I FELT SAD THAT DUSTFINGER DIDNT GET HIS WISH OF BEING READ BACK IN TO HIS STORY THOUGH. GREAT BOOK LOVED IT GREAT FOR ALL AGES

Absolutely wonderful and engaging book. I hate the label of kids lit because it contained so many appealing elements that an adult would be drawn to. I will be reading this book again to that I make a list of all the other books that the author mentions. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter was a sweet little bonus. I will be purchasing the sequels soon because I have to know what happens to Dustfinger!

Yet another magic fantasy series and yet again I get bowled over by the authors imagination, Imagine you are reading Cinderella and she juts pops out of the book and stands right in front of you, looking as beautiful as the author portrayed her in the book. This series is all that and more, it's a story of a father and daughter who are blessed with this magical tongue and what happens when they start reading a particular book called Inkheart.Where Inkheart leaves you thirsty for more, Inkspell takes you to the virtual world of this book. The adventure expands manifold and just when you don't want the book to finish and the story to carry on the author intelligently makes sure that you are left thirsty for the last part of the series......the story continues and now I have to wait for two books....last part of Inheritance series and this one.....Inkheart is also being made in a movie and the trailer looks really exciting...

Firstly there has been a lot of books about mythical vampires falling in love and wizards etc. It gets tiresome after sometime.
Rarely do you come across a story that explores the REAL reason why one LOVES books; its more than just the love of reading and feeling that page in your hand.Who hasn't thought about how exhilarating it would be if we could bring those characters to life. This is what this Inkheart does and takes it a step further with its instantly likeable characters and storyline of the cliched good v/s evil.
A thoroughly enjoyable read...

This book is about people who treasure books, love to read books, love to get lost in books, love hard-bound books, love to carry a book with them whereever they go, love to have a house full of books, and love to get lost in books. I enjoyed reading about characters as neurotic as myself about books! I found this book to be very enchanting. It held my interest the whole time. Even when I thought there was no where to go, it kept building and getting exciting. I just love this author. She is so talented! Excellent read.

First book in the Inkheart trilogy.

When Meggie's dad reads aloud, strange things happen. He can bring characters out of books, but at a price--someone from the real world must trade places and Mo doesn't have any control over who gets traded. When an evil character from the book Inkheart tries to force Mo to read his whole gang into reality, what are Meggie and her father to do?

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "lost in a good book."

This was quite possibly one of the worst books I've ever forced myself to read. The minor characters (Dustfinger, Farid, Basta) were more interesting and dynamic than the main ones (Meggie, Mo, Capricorn). Meggie was an annoying and unenchanting heroine. There was nothing strong or even intelligent about her. Mo was not revealed as well as he should've been. I did not find Capricorn in the least bit frightening. He might have been manipulative, but the fact that he never actually DID anything, and that he was pompous and vain to the extreme, made him more annoying than scary. The movement of the story was slow, some of the shorter chapters were definitely unecessary, and even though it is the first book in a trilogy, there was little closure to anything at all. This novel was a major disappointment - I was quite excited to read it and was bored stiff after only a few chapters. I don't reccommend this book in any way - if you want good and fantastical action - find it elsewhere.

This novel is particularly interesting to me, primarily because I can see a lot of myself in the character of Meggie. To be further truthful, I've had some dreams that have placed me in positions not unlike said heroine of this book. Meggie and I share an incomprehensible passion for the written word, and she reminds me very strongly of how I used to be at the age of twelve. I think that is why the strong kinmanship I feel for the character.

That aside, this novel is one for a crowd that's not afraid of thinking. It subtly raises some thematic material that might inspire a speculative thought or two. The language used to tell this story is lovely - just lovely. Eloquent, beautiful, pleasing word choice, all throughout. It equally is highly original - while the storyline is not unlike that of many fantasy novels that have already been written, it is executed in a refreshing fashion and the characters stray far from the standard fantasy story residents - they are believable, sympathetic, and have endearing quirks. What's better, they all have their own language. A reader could guess the character speaking without being told, just by the words used in the dialogue. This is an impressive maneuver on the part of Funke.

I won't keep rambling for fear of spoiling the story, but I do recommend it to any fantasy reader out there - it will be worth your while. That's all, folks.

Very few things annoy me as much in a book as a brilliant plot concept poorly executed. One feels something high and excellent is forever wasted. (This is one reason I will never grow fond of "Tuck Everlasting.") Ms. Funke certainly had a brilliant plot concept; I only wish she hadn't worked so hard to make her characteristics "life-like." Their petty flaws and over-obvious idiosyncracies drive me crazy, and they come across as shallow and almost too distinct for reality. Like cut out cookies that have then been bent and decorated in a desperate attempt to make them individual. All of the creative writing tips I've ever heard come back to me: Give your characters flaws, give them unique speech patterns and body language, etc. Perhaps Ms. Funke followed the formula too closely. That said, the idea and the cover art are lovely, and I love Dustfinger, even if I sense a fill-in-the-blanks character form behind his complex face. Also, in all fairness, my younger brother (12) raced through this book and its sequel. (I got halfway through "Inkspell" before I couldn't stand Meggie another instant and stowed the book for a very rainy day.)

This is a very well written young reader book. I picked this up because I loved the movie The Thief Lord, which Funke also wrote. This book was not a disapointment. The bad guy, Capricorn, is easily disliked and the good guys, Mo and Meggie, win in the end. Despite that predictable plot ending, the story is very fresh. Many of the characters have been accidentally read off of the textual pages and are now living in our world. I don't want to give away the plot, but this is a very good read and fantasy readers will enjoy this.
