I felt that it really fell apart in the third book. There were just too many plot lines, too many loose ends that never got tied, and too much foreshadowing that never amounted to anything. The author also has a really annoying habit of introducing huge amounts of vitally important information in the final couple chapters. Every writing class I've ever taken has taught that you don't introduce new information in the conclusion.

This is probably my favorite of the His Dark Materials series. Everything is tied up in the final installment, and leaves you wanting more. The tale as a whole is an intricately woven story of alternate dimensions, Daemons (or human souls), and other fantastical elements. The ending is great, and the writing itself is superb.

Third book in His Dark Materials trilogy.

The story continues right where The Subtle Knife left off. Lyra has been captured by Mrs. Coulter and is being kept in a drugged sleep in an isolated cave. Will, joined by two angels, is determined to find Lyra and return the alethiometer to her.

Dr. Mary Malone, a physicist who cares a great deal about Lyra, escapes from her world into a beautiful and simple society. The inhabitants, the mulefa, are strange creatures that look like animals, but have human consciousness. As Dust streams out of their world, they worry that what makes their world beautiful will soon disappear forever. Mary agrees to help them solve the problem of escaping Dust, but she needs the help of Will and Lyra. However, Will and Lyra have undertaken a journey into the realms of Death to find Roger and may never return.

Meanwhile, the Church is determined to kill Lyra before she can fulfill her destiny. The main theme of Pullman's trilogy, as an angel explains it to Serafina Pekkala, is the reason that Pullman's work continues to appear on banned book lists. "All the history of human life has been a struggle between wisdom and stupidity. The rebel angels, the followers of wisdom, have always tried to open minds; the Authority and his churches have always tried to keep them closed."

Pullman can write very moving passages, and they make the book. On the downside, I found the resolution lacking. Everything is explained adequately, but much that came before seemed extraneous.

my favorite quote: "He couldn't keep still: he flew up again, scouring the sky as if to seek out Baruch in this cloud or that, calling, crying, calling; and then he'd be overcome with guilt, and fly down to urge Will to hide and keep quiet, and promise to watch over him tirelessly; and then the pressure of his grief would crush him to the ground, and he'd remember every instance of kindness and courage that Baruch had ever shown, and there were thousands, and he'd forgotten none of them; and he'd cry that a nature so gracious could never be snuffed out, and he'd soar into the skies again, casting about in every direction, reckless and wild and stricken, cursing the very air, the clouds, the stars."

after the first 2 great books, this was disappointing. full of inconsistencies and times where I thought, "well, that's silly." Not tight like the first 2. And jeez, everyone in the multiverse of this book, including 8 year olds, only ever seem to drink coffee.

This one is the best of all three. It made me shed a tear in the end.
