An interesting read, particularly for the way it portrays adolescent girls, but the message about "choosing for yourself" in regards to religion is undermined by the fact that Margaret ultimately flees from the choice and stays with the status quo -- ie: what her parents taught her. She does so, not out of a conviction that they are right, but because it is easy and it is what she has always known. What is, in effect, the CONSERVATIVE nature of its supposedly earnest and progressive narrative is really what stuck with me most. Perhaps I might have gotten more out of it had i read it when i was a kid, or had I been female?

I was very much not this kind of teenager, and really couldn't understand why they did a lot of what they did.

On the other hand, it's a bit of a period piece (hah!) about feminine hygiene products half a generation ahead of mine. (Though I now hear they've updated the technology in the book. Oh well. I guess if it's meant to be educational, it ought to be current.)

I had to read this book in the dark with a flashlight and a blanket over me. I didn't want my mother to think I had questions about religion.

A classic when you are young and growing. Made me think I was not alone and wanted to talk to God. I laughed and enjoyed it so much I read all her book following after. I guess I related.

Fantastic book for any young person approaching puberty and enjoyable for adults as well. I read this book around age 10 and it served as a main source of facts 'o life info for me...not as nitty gritty as I needed (and, really, that kind of info should come from a parent and not a book) but it's a GREAT story and very realistic in dealing with issues effecting young people--esp girls--approaching that time of growth. Parents: read it first, then pass it along to your daughters (and sons, even) to read then DISCUSS it together! Would be great lead in for some healthy parent/child cozy time and talks.

I have a few reservations about this one. First of all, while this is a good book and is worth at least a read, it does not deserve to be on Time Magazine's top 100 novels list AT ALL. It certainly opened strong but the middle dragged a bit HOWEVER I finally began to sympathize with Margaret in the 3rd arc which actually saved this book a great deal for me. By this point, it was quite emotionally involving but then out of nowhere, it ended. And I suppose that's fine in that resolutions aren't always needed but I still think it came up a bit short so even though I gave it 3 stars, it's actually more like a high 2 stars.

I really didn't get to read this book. I mean, I tried, but I made the mistake of asking my dad what the word "menstruation" meant....at least I think it was menstruation...maybe it was " mastrubation"... Does Blume cover that before "Wifey"?Anyway, at 38 years old, I'm sure I remain the only girl in my 6th grade class who has not read this book. That's what you get when you have Irish Roman Catholic parents. That's okay though, I ended up reading "Do Not Disturb the Dream" and the whole "Flowers in the Attic" series....it seems that the word "God" sets off alarm bells while the words "flowers" and "attic" happily go right under the irish roman catholic radar.

Who doesn't like the Judy Blume books from a kid? Sweet, she seems to know what kids think and what they want to read.

This is the ultimate book that every female, whatever her age, should read AT LEAST once! It's the charming story of 12 year old Margaret who learns what entering into womanhood is about. It's everything, we as females, go through from a young girl through the awkwardness of puberty.

I read this book shortly before coming into "womanhood" and am so grateful I did! At the time I read it, my parents were divorced and I lived with my dad. Not only did it talk about what daily life was like at that age, it also talked about what she experienced. (It was sure nice to learn about this without me being embarrassed to talk to my dad about it)! I still love to go back and read it now and then. I highly recommend it to preteens getting ready for that time in their life! It's a really fun, entertaining read to live life through this 12-year-old character. :)

Somehow I made it to age 24 without ever reading this book. And yet, even now, I'm glad I did. Apparently this is some children literature staple and a fixture in pop culture. So therefore it must be read.

It's surprisingly cute and insightful. As I read it, I had flashbacks to more than 12 years ago and recalled similar incidents, thoughts, and feelings.

Some aspects of the story are a little outdated (the book was published in 1970) but Margaret's exploration of spirituality and sexuality is probably somewhat timeless.

I really appreciate Judy Blume for writing a book that reflects a person's personal struggle with the desire to find out which relgion they belong to or even just discussing the person's desire to be spiritually in tuned with a God. Margaret is a very likeable, young preteen on the brink of puberty going through the motions of what it means to be a twelve-year-old. The twist is that she is also figuring where her place is in the world through her family and even through having conversations with an undefined God. When I say undefined, I mean that she just has a general concept of God. Margaret tries to seek God by seeing how she fits into other religions by experiencing it with others close to her. Overall, Judy Blume is amazing at capturing what it means to be at that age and more. It was a delightful read.
