I had to read this for a class in collage and I feel like I was a worse person after reading it. I actually felt guilty and just sick to my stomach not only while reading it but a month afterward when we took an exam on it! I would NOT recommend this for sensitive children or children that are being picked on.

I read this as a kid then again with my daughter. My daughter hated this book because it was hard to get through, but I'm glad she prevailed and finished it anyway!

Just goes to show how cruel kids can be, especially girls. Loved this book for it's morals.

I didn't like it as much as something else I read by Judy... don't remember what right now. Nevertheless, it was ok.

I found this book mostly unpleasant. In junior high (after I read the book, I think), I became the "Blubber" of my school. I wasn't fat, didn't have grey teeth, in fact was a cute and bright little kid who was just immature enough to handle one comment badly--and I became a target for the next couple of years. That's a realistic aspect of the book--it doesn't take much, just one incident, to turn a kid into a handy target for all. But I always had one friend who was even less socially acceptable than I was (different such friend in each school I went to, not the same one the whole time). Not because I sought out someone to dominate, but because I didn't have it in me to reject them the way everyone else did. And yes, sometimes I worried about whether associating with that friend would be bad for me socially. In high school, when I'd managed to stop being the kid everyone hated, I didn't defend that friend when they needed it, because I was afraid the pack would turn on me. So yeah, I do understand social pressures, too. I can identify with some aspects of Jill's behavior. Some. Whenever it was that I read this book, I found most of it squirmingly unpleasant. I can't remember if I read this book before or during junior high, so I don't know if I read it with a true underdog's perspective. I don't really remember identifying with Linda. She's not written to be identified with, and that's part of the problem with the book. She's set up to be undesirable in every way. I guess we're supposed to understand why the "cool" characters don't like her; we're just not supposed to endorse what they do to her. What's the message, "Be kind to losers?" Yeah, great social progress there. The book buys into the system it's supposed to be chastising. But I suppose that's the way it needs to be, since it's girls who function within that system (the in-crowd, potential abusers) who are the target audience of the book.

In spite of the cultural/generational differences, it still holds up strong. I loved this book and still do.

One of my absolute favs that was given to me when I was 8. I still have the same copy and it is well read. Decided to read again the other day - love Judy Blume!

This book has a lot of meaning and it is really amazing! I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read!

This is a fun book to read! I read this when I was 12. I would suggest parents talking to their daughters using this book to bring up conversations about weight and self-esteem. I often would go outside when I was reading this book because Judy Blume brings up alot of topics young girls face as they reach the pre-teen years. A good read for 11 years and up.(A girls book)
