As my professor would say, this was a child hating book like Oliver Twist.

Fantastic childrens story with a moral of how innocence and purity are wrongfully marked as evil.

Roger used to be a rat, but now he’s a boy. A kindly shoemaker and his wife take him in, begin teaching him manners, and begin to think of him as their own. The happily ever after doesn’t come that easily though; Roger is kidnapped to be part of a carnival freak show, “rescued” by a band of thieves who want to use his rat-like wriggling powers for their own gain, and eventually thrown in the dungeon because everyone thinks he’s a hideous monster from the sewers. Roger’s story is based on a well-known fairy tale. Hints as to which fairy tale that is are sprinkled throughout the book until the truth is finally revealed. Although wrapped in a humorous satire that pokes fun at the power of the press, people’s obsession with the sensational, and the damage those things can do, Roger’s journey to find his place in the world is a moving one full of hope. Black and white illustrations depicting tabloid newspaper covers and some of the characters appear throughout.

This was definitely an usual take on the faerie-tale, but I thought it was interesting, though a bit bland. And while I think Pullman's astute parody and mocking of our society, school and justice systems, and media influence are accurate, if a bit too heavy-handed, I always found the fact that he chooses to bring them all up in children books a rather questionable decision.

Read it in Spanish "Yo era una rata". Very amusing and pointed as well as a good blend of the unreal and the all too real. A little heavy handed in the author's portrayal of human nature and society.

When Bob the cobbler hears a knock on the door, he finds a dirty little boy on his doorstep. Bob and his wife, who have never had a child of their own, take in the boy and name him Roger. Roger remembers nothing about his past and all he has to say about it is, "I was a rat." Bob and Joan quickly come to love Roger, even as he shreds his bedding and eats all the pencils he can find.

A series of misadventures leaves Roger (the rat-monster) on trial for his life. Articles in "The Daily Scourge" villify Roger and call for his extermination. Pullman's playful fairy tale retelling shows the power of the press and asks us to question what it really means to be human. Despite a rather dark view of human nature, the good guys do eventually get their "happily ever after."
