I started reading very early, at 8 years old, I think was my third or fourth book , I think the first book I read as a child was the Flying Knights, about the first airmail pilots. I was in the third grade and my friends wouldn't believe I was reading a book with no pictures. I was the Island of the Blue Dolphins in 4th grade, and my teacher took it from me about 10 times. I still remember this book, after about 40 years. I had my daughter Violet read this and she loved it as well. It is a story that transcends generations.

I remembered reading this book at a much younger age and absolutely loving it. I found an extremely old copy of the book today and decided to devote an hour or so to reading it again; I was not disappointed. It is still a children's book, first and foremost, but it is the kind of book that children really should be reading. There is actually historical and cultural significance in this book and a good story. This is the kind of book that deserves its Newberry Medal. It really isn't my absolute favorite children's book, but it is one of the better ones written. At times, it seems like the author is trying way too hard to elicit emotion from the reader by killing virtually everyone and everything close to the main character. I found that I did not cry while reading the book, it was a quick read, and it was a fairly enjoyable reading experience.

I first read this book in fourth grade and it's one I love to read again and again. It tells a great story that you don't realize is a true one till you read the author's note at the end. It's very engaging; you feel for Karana throughout.

This book was very insperational to me as a 5th grader and so when I found it at a yard sale some 30 years latter I knew I had to have it for myself and for my kids collection of must have books.

Read this book in the 3rd grade and loved it. I read it again in my 20s and had a different perspective and saw her as an adult. There is an underlying story of what happens when we ruin an ecosystem and also what happens when a foreign invader comes to your shores.

A favorite from my childhood; my 3rd-grade teacher, Mrs. Hall, used to read aloud a chapter to our class everyday after lunch. One day she began this story, and I was hooked from the first chapter--if not from the first page! That a young girl could survive and be so brave, and so resourceful was something I could personally hardly comprehend..my own life was vastly different. But this story gave me hope, and enabled me to see beyond the perimeters of my own dark and ominous island, and to at least escape it by Imagi Nation :-)--which I frequently took advantage of! Thank you, Scott O'Dell, for your portrayal of this beautiful, courageous, resourceful young woman!
