This is continuing the character studies of 1 and 2 and turning out to be one of my best series that I have read in a while.

Holy crap i was stunned by the amazing desciptions and details in this book. Tavi just gets better and better and the military tactics are presented in an easy to understand format with a beautiful characterization of the Canes. Kitai is so freaking awesome

The series is fine. I find myself not caring about some characters. But this book was definitely much better than the last one. I just don't buy Tavi as anything more than a kid. It's a mediocre story filled with teeth-rottingly perfect protagonists and foolishly evil antagonists. Doesn't approach Tolkien or Jordan, but a good effort and worth reading.

Probably my favorite book in the Codex Alera, it is the turning point book, the book when it all actually becomes real, and in becoming real becomes completely unwieldy for the characters, even those that are as magically gifted as these. It's Fun.

3rd book in and I'm still loving Butcher's take on fantasy.Revelations, chaos and more challenges than you can shake a stick at made for another great read and after finishing this one I was basically forced to run out and purchase the 4th one.I highly recommend this series. Great fun.

If you like George RR Martin, this series was just as good as the Song of Ice and Fire. For you GRRM fans, no... seriously... I mean it. :)

I bought Books 1-3 in a shot. This is definitely the worst of all the 3 so far. Bored to tears. In the 3rd book, the 3rd race unleashes itself onto the Aleran homeland (AGAIN?!) The romance is shaky, the characters behave like adolescents, and the timelines (btw the different hero groups involved in different plots) just do not sync up!

Fast paced reading. Found some interesting tidbits about Tavi's father AND mother. ALSO, Tavi found his furies in the last 2 pages!!!

Tavi, a seemingly innocent country boy is trust into an unexpected destiny. His origins are not quite what he thought they were. Forced to take command of the army after a series of misfortune, Tavi must find a way to deflect the might of a canim invasion. His quick reflexes and revolutionary thinking make him a hero.

These just keep getting better! I love Butcher's writing style - very cinematic and epic. Also, I was pleased that he finally wrought some changes long overdue in the plot.

Another great read. The military strategy was fascinating in this one, and I appreciate how Butcher manages to combine sweeping plots with the smaller, slowly-revealed story of Tavi and his loved ones. My only complaint is that things are just a little too pat in this one -- everything resolved too neatly and easily to seem true. But otherwise, it's good and entertaining.

This one is actually a slight improvement over the last, I suspect it's largely because of less of Isana's involvement, and the presence of Kalare provides a decent villain. Granted, he may as well have a tophot, black cape, thin mustache and call himself "Kalare whiplash", but at least its something. Of course, the whole magic=furies thing is still paper thin, and the plot is incredibly predictable, however, the bottom line is its still easier to read then academ's fury was.

This one did it for me. Have you ever been reading a book and stopped for a moment to plead with the Author to have written it like you're hoping. Wishing and praying for it to go the way you might want it. Not that that is always the best or this reader knows more of where a book should go that the guy/gal writing it. But I've been there countless times only to have myself momentarily disappointed when the story goes left. This one when right along with what I was wishing for.

Awesome! The last half the of book is right in your face and rolling forward so fast and heavy that I couldn't put it down. Three different story arcs building and building into a fantastic ending. THE ENDING! As far as I'm concerned the best ending I've ever got to experience. I was giddy for like an hour.

So now this is my new favorite Fantasy series. Right above George R. R. Martin and Robert Jordan.

I love this series and while I have yet to read the last book, I think this is my favorite now that I am doing a second read/listen before I get to the last book. In this book, Tavi realizes his leadership potential, utilizing his previous training. Butcher manages to continue building on his story arc, each piece giving growth to his characters. This is how a finite series should be plotted. As readers we may never want to see the end of our favorite characters, but it is so amazing to read something that has direction and a plan.

Didn't enjoy these as much as The Dresden Files - this was old school fantasy, and it took a while but again the series got more enjoyable as I went along.

One of the things I like best about this series is how deceptively simple it is. I've been reading a bit more fantasy again lately, and the contrast is marked. For me, reading an average fantasy book is like wading through thick mud. Reading the Codex Alera is like running on a track. It reads smooth and clean. There's plenty of atmosphere, and the worldbuilding is first rate, but it's not hidden in a dense tangle of oddly-spelled words and long passages of dull description. Conversely, the plot of the average fantasy book is really rather straightforward once you get to it, while the Cursor's Fury's plot is just full of twists and turns and tiny details that turn out to be major clues to future events. The closer you pay attention, the more complex the book gets.

This series just keeps getting more intense and complex. Mr. Butcher has created a world with lots of potential for continued development on his part and I love it.

The Aleran Codex finally comes into its own with both characters and story that compel the reader to keep turning the pages.
