Although in my opinion this second installment wasn't quite as good as the first, it was still an enjoyable read. I love the fact that Charlaine Harris has taken various tubes of acrylic and squeezed them onto a canvas and then just smeared all the genres together. Along with the mainstream vampires, telepaths, and shapeshifters Harris tosses a Greek mythological creature and religious zealots in the mix of this second story. Being summoned by the delightful head vampire Eric, Sookie and her undead boyfriend Bill learn they're being sent to Dallas so her telepathic skills can aid a nest of vampires in locating a missing brother. The reader is introduced to a whole new gang of vampires, shapeshifters, and religious fanatics as this story plays out. A sub-plot involves the murder of a Bon Temps local, a maenad, and an orgy(!) Harris' narrative is easy to read, humorous, and the characters are a lot of fun.

i almost prefer this to book one. i nearly couldnt put it down. i love Eric's ridiculous misbehaviour and Sookie's ditty yet charming personality. Yet i wouldnt give it the full 5 stars because she repeats alot of things she said in book one, even to the extent of using the exact same descriptions of people like JB du Rone.

MUCH more on par with how True Blood is, though it doesn't exactly follow the second season. Things are changed, as they have to be because the book is all from Sookie's POV. But there is a lot of Eric in this one, and he tends to be my favorite. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot more than the first book. Harris' writing is improving tremendously, as is the trend with most series writers. Definitely recommend this one if you read the first. It shouldn't disappoint.

Like the first one, the TV show was really loyal to the book. Though I was really intrigued by the episode when Sookie meet Luna and her "friends". Some things were changed from the novel, but that happens all the time. I have to say though that the story line with the meanad (is it that way you spell it?) was far more interesting in the show however. I understand though that since it is Sookie whos telling the story in the book, it is somewhat hard to learn more about the other characters, specially when she is not present (duh!), and that only the show made it possible...but still. I was happy to see that Tara did actually exist, but she wasnt like the Tara in the show. finally, I couldn't believe the death of... the character in the car at the beginning. I am so happy that character survived the show! anyways, it is still good, and I am really intrigued by the third book.(33)

I have to say the second season of True Blood... I liked the Godric version better, but in the book... I love the Sookie and Eric parts. Personally, I do not like Bill. I don't trust him, I like Eric. I don't know why, but the way he does things, start to play out and make sense. But it's ok.

This is the second installment in the Sookie Stackhouse series and I have to say it cannot get any more interesting!!! The book started with the discovery of the body of Lafayette, one of the cooks that work at Merlotte’s, the bar where Sookie works as a barmaid, in the back of Andy Bellefleur's car. Just when Sookie tries to find out what happen, she and Bill are being summoned by Eric. On the way to Fangtasia, a maenad attacks Sookie leaving her badly wounded with blood poisoning. With the help of Bill, Eric, Pam(Eric’s second in command) and Chow(new bartender at Fangtasia), she is saved. When Sookie waits up, she finds out the nature of their visit to Eric. They’ve been given a job. Eric, being aware of her ability, has loaned her out to the convent in Dallas to help track down on of their missing brothers, Farrell.

Bill and Sookie arrive at Dallas and they meet up with Stan, the local sheriff. To their surprise, Eric, in disguise, has also arrived as a guest as Stan’s. After some investigation using Sookie’s ability, they find out that Farrell’s disappearance is related to the anti-vampire organization, Fellowship of the Sun, with the assistance of a vampire named Godfrey. Sookie then decides to infiltrate the Fellowship with the help of Hugo, one of the human companion of Isabel, one of the vampires in Stan’s convent. They prevent to be a couple and meet up with Steve and Sarah Newlin, the couple leading the church. Unknown to Sookie, however, Hugo is a traitor and they end up being hostages of the church.

Badly injured and nearly gets herself into a possible rape, Sookie escapes with the help of Godfrey, a vampire who has decided to meet her sun to redeem his sin, and Luna, a shapeshifter. Bill, on the other hand, together with the Dallas vampires rescue Farrell from the fellowship headquarter. As an revenge, the fellowship launch an attack on Stan’s nest and Eric protects Sookie and takes some bullets in the process.

Furious at Bill not being with her there when the fellowship attack, Sookie leaves after the incident. Back in Bon Temps, Sookie continues her search for Lafayette’s killer. She remembers Lafayette mentioned about a sex party he went to before his death. When she gets invited to a mysterious party at one of the locals, she accepts the invitation in the hope that she would find out something about the people at the party. She asks Eric to go to the party with her as her “bodyguard”. To her surprise, she finds Tara, her friend from high school, and Eggs, Tara’s fiance at the party. At the climax of party, the maenad which attacked Sookie earlier shows up to ‘feed on” on the drunkenness and lust generated by the party group and killed everyone apart from Eric, Sookie, Tara, Eggs and Bill and Andy who later turn up at the scene. Eric and Bill clear up the mess and Eric glamour Tara to make her forget what happened at the party.

It was an enjoyable and fun packed read and Charlaine has certainly developed a bit more on the characters. In the last book, we get the hint that Eric is interested in Sookie. And in this second book, he has more or less become her “knight” or ‘hero” who is always there for her when she is in danger, we start to see more of Eric, the bad guy who is actually good in the heart. And I have to say the part where she describes Sookie and Eric(in very funny outfit) meeting up before the sex party is hilarious!! I like the way Charlaine developes the chemistry between the characters. Charlaine also expands on the world of supe. In book 1, she more or less focuses on vampires and occassionally shapeshifters. In book 2, we get introduced to werewolves, a special kind of shapeshifters and the existance of other telepaths, it is definitely getting more interesting.

Personally, I think the main theme in this book is religion. She introduces the anti-vampire organization Fellowship of the Sun(FOS)and uses it to explore some of the current issues related to religion. For example, Sookie nearly gets raped by one of the followers of FOS-a metaphor of sexual abuse within reglious organization. The FOS hold bondfire gathering where they see a vampire meeting the sun, in other words, a public execution. They “bomb” Stan’s house. These reflect many of the issues related to religion extremisium. I also like the mentioning of Godfrey, the vampire who was trying to redeem himself as he preyed on children, a child abuser and killer. This sort of raises some thoughts within me. What is our attitude towards people who have done such horrible things? How can their wrong doings can ever be redeemed? I cannot wait starting book 3 to see what’s in store!!

This is the next book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Sookie is sent to Dallas to do some digging for the vampires because of her special gift. This book is just as interesting and thrilling as the first one. Sookie is a characters you can really relate to. It is just enjoyable to read.

Surely a great sequel to "Dead Until Dark"! I suppose that Harris had a great intuition in moving temporarily the story to Dallas, TX... it made everything more interesting! In this second book we have the chance to get to know better Bill and Eric's personalities; and I have to say that Eric gets more and more interesting page after page... he seems to deserve and desire Sookie much more than Bill! Also, the introduction of Weres and shapeshifters here in this book was such a great surprise; you just can't astop your growing sympathy for Sam! - My only complain is the lack of romantic scenes between Bill and Sookie, and Bill's unusual behaviour... but apart from this, the book was great, very easy to follow, involving and yet not predictable at all.

You know how I had a bad reaction to the first SS book? Yeah, this one is better. BUT there is a big but on that. See, Sookie is a telepath and she's able to solve mysteries by reading people's thoughts. In this mystery, Lafayette is found dead in chapter one (NO NOT LAFAYETTE!! NOOO!!!! Yeah, he's my favorite on the show) and then for the next 20 chapters Sookie is called away to Dallas so she doesn't solve the mystery really quick-like. Now, Dallas is an interesting digression, because the anti-vampire church, the Fellowship of the Sun, makes its debut and what can I say? Harris has captured a part of kooky khristian kulture pretty dang well here, if you catch my drift. So Sookie does her little thing there and then goes back home to solve Lafayette's murder, which turns out to be kind of easy as soon as she hits the orgy (of course! He's gay! He must have been killed at an orgy! (head banging on desk)). And the supernatural cast of characters gets bigger. I can see the D&D book for this series. How many HPs does a maenad have? Another quibble: Her and Bill, do they ever talk or do they just do it all the time? Because their relationship sounds ... dull. Even with the vampire missions.
Anyway, Sookie's voice is still entertaining, but I have to say, Alan Ball really took this series to the next level and made it transcend genre. Once you go Trueblood, it makes it hard to say, as I so often have, "the book is better." Because, no, it's not.
