Biggest downside is that if you have not read Neuromancer, you will not figure out the story. The plot will still be interesting, but what the loa are, who the mystery artist is, and the cause of all the novel's events will be pretty much unknown to you without knowing the events of Neuromancer.

In a way this one is better than Neuromancer. Try it out if you like a good Cyberpunk fiction.

The follow-up to Neuromancer, but only loosely connected. The world's the same, characters are mostly different. The world of the main character is the "Sprawl," the suburban stretch between Boston and Atlanta, a wasteland of empty lots and dangerous roving gangs and everyday folks settled into a media-driven stupor. Sound familiar?

Absolutely wonderful. Having established his utterly original rules in Neuromancer, Gibson plays with them here; art, mortality, economics and voodoo, all appear as themes or plot elements, and what's more, there's never a moment in which I disbelieved the novel. Its openness is palpable and deceptive, like Hemingway writing SF, or a zen poem about microprocessors.

Worst. Book. Ever. I for the life of me can't understand how Pattern Recognition was by the same author.

Strong followup to Neuromancer. Many similarities, but it is not a repackaging of the earlier masterpiece. The incorporation and unique characterization of the Voodoo Loa is stunningly original and inspires admiration, respect, and applause for the imagination and artistry of William Gibson.

Really underrated second book in the Sprawl Trilogy. No Molly Millions, but still awesome.

Not as good as the first book, and very different. Again the story was not interesting, it was the moods and world which was what held the book up. If you like finishing trilogies then pick up this book.

The book that started the whole cyberpunk genre. You can't go wrong with William Gibson

Once again: SUPERB. Should be read together with Neuromancer (first!) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (third). These three kind of belong together and feature the same protagonist, Case. I've said it before and will gladly repeat: William Gibson's books are absolutey fantastic and will forever be my no.1 recommendation to other people!

Fantastic. Takes a new spin in his Cyberpunk story by showing us the world through the eyes of a corporate merc, a rookie Cowboy (netrunner), and an art specialists...

I like Gibson, but he needs to work on the end of his stories.

There are times when Count Zero surpasses Neuromancer, and other times where it just doesn't click the. In some ways if feels like a less ambitious book; despite some massive trips undertaken by some of the characters, the story feels far more local, perhaps because it rarely seems to matter where anyone actually is. Neuromancer had a character in Case who constantly remarked and pondered upon the places he visited, which allowed the reader to come along on his journey. In Count Zero, we are merely watching the events take place.

When I finished the novel, I got the feeling that maybe Gibson was holding back a bit. While it doesn't follow the exact path of Neuromancer, both stories have somewhat similar setups for their finales. This bothered me, as the characters and their conflicts in Count Zero are not the same as in Neuromancer, thus space station visits and final showdowns with AI in the Matrix don't have quite the same impact or suspense.

Count Zero easily shines its brightest when dealing with the character of Turner, especially early on. While Neuromancer only alluded to the power of large corporations, Turner shows us exactly what they can do and what can happen because of it. Watching a corporate mercenary do his thing with ruthless efficiency is a stark contrast to the hacker methods of Case, and if the novel had revolved exclusively around this theme, I might have been blown away again. Instead we have nothing more than the middle chapter in a trilogy; it doesn't have much of a purpose but to set the stage for a thrilling conclusion.

Count Zero sees Gibson still establishing the world he'd go on to do such great things with in Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties, and so there's a whole load of atmosphere and not as much story. Make no mistake, this still means its a fascinating read that paints a vivid, unique perspective on the future, but the quality of it has since been surpassed by later works, making this one lose a little shine by comparison.

Personally I preferred this one to 'Neuromancer'. Definitely well ahead of its time. Thoroughbred sci-fi :)

Book doesn't make any sense. Engagingly written, but it's all over the place. Shows its age a bit too.

I was tempted to give it no stars, and then say this was truly Count ZERO :) , but it might look like I just didn't rate it. So I'm giving it one "pity" star. It was only marginally coherent. My carpool agreed.

Re-read it for the fifth or sixth time. One of Gibson's best, perhaps even better than Mona Lisa Overdrive. Doesn't seem dated, even though it's now over 20 years old.

I read this one after reading _Mona Lisa Overdrive_ and while the two stories are independent, I knew where some of these story lines were going. As great is the imagined near-future world of Mr. Gibson, after reading _Neuromancer_ and _Pattern Recognition_, _Count Zero_ felt a bit like a recycled story. Mysterious old-money non-corporate pupet master - check. Strong female support character who seems more in touch than the male protagonist - check. Rookie cyber-cowboy in over his head but pulling through - check. Good story - check.

I love Gibson's writing style, but this one was really 3 novellas that only made passing reference to each other until the end of the book. So trying to remember where the current thread picks up after 2 intervening chapters was...annoying. Good stories if that wouldn't bother you.

Gibson is very good at telling the world and exude this feel of solidity in which the world is grounded in. The characters are nicely developed, or rather developing. The diction by some of the characters are delightful to read for their slang. It really gets the imagination rolling. However, the whole book felt like an introduction with hints of a plot but, before you know it, it's done. Same thing happened with the Neuromancer. Read Gibson for his farseeing world but not for the plot, or you will be disappointed.
