An interesting book with an interesting ending which led to the start of the "Chapter House" and the end series.

Lacked the drive of the previous books. Its ambling pace made it hard to get into and its hurried ending leading into Chapterhouse felt like an attempt at a cliffhanger. Hoping for more from Chapterhouse.

Long after the God Emperor's transformation back into thesand trouts, the worms came back on Rakis (time-modified name of Arrakis. Sisterhood continued independtly of their newer plys only to finally realize nobody is independent in this finely meshed up intricacy of the universe. An epitome of journey into human behavior, this novel tries to find a balance between emotion and reason.

Honestly, my favorite of the Dune books. This book combined with Chapterhouse: Dune are superb examples of social politics in science fictions. Herbert never assumes the reader is lame, and every line has meaning. A high recommendation for anyone that loves sci-fi and current events.

I like it, but be prepared the further you go into the series the more philosophical the plot becomes. Heretic is not near as philosophy driven as Dune Messiah, but it's still in that vein. A great book.

By this, the 5th book of the series, I'm pretty well over it. Dune was great, and I even loved Children of Dune and the political/social philosophy that abounded in God Emperor of Dune, but it just seems as if things have run their course. This book deals with the same groups, the same ideas, the same settings, and even the same motives as the previous ones. That's fine if you really get to know and love the characters, but with Herbert, they are new in every book. Herberts books can be page-turners and they can be very thought-provoking...but this one was neither. I'll read the next book only because I have come this far, not really out of genuine interest.

I heard the Frank Herbert had syphilis that was eating away at his brain while he was writting this. I can totally see that. Frank Herbert has alway put things in his books that he would just assume the reader would get and not fully explain it, but that is pretty much this entire book. What the hell was the scattering? Why the hell did the Bene Geserit continue trying to make the Quisatz Hadarach? Why did they think they could achieve this by making ANOTHER Duncan Idaho? The questiong just abound and are NEVER answered.

As the books got farther away from Dune, they just got wierder and wierder, didn't they? This one and Chapterhouse Dune I don't presume to understand at all, but I made valiant efforts.

The Dune Books (main 6) are a monument to what the human imagination is capable of.I seem to remember this one being at bit more on the action side (well, "action" has an unusual definition in the Dune universe).

A new turn in the Dune saga.
This book takes a new look in being at a very different period of history with only one character from the other books actually being in it (Duncan Idaho is brought back to life again).
An excellent read. Good characters and a new take on some of the pivotal groups of the series.

The Dune Universe is always a fun place to visit, but Herbert's vision is clearest in the earlier books. This is definately not a stand-alone read.

The story continues far past Paul and his Leto into the distant future, where we fall into the effects of the God Emperor and his legacy.Much easier to read than book 4.

Too long for its content. I remember it being wrongly balanced, between amazing plot point and insignificant substories. But a Dune fan stays till the end.

Okay, the only thing I can really say is that I am glad I finally got around to reading it. I will read Chapterhouse now for completion sake because I'm like that, but anyone can really stop at Children of Dune and be happy with how the saga ends there.
Finally reading this book after almost twenty years since I read Dune and ten since I read God Emperor.

I first read this book way back when, and I found myself enjoying it as much then as I did now.

First thing, for those coming to SF through the blockbuster movies, you will be disappointed. Like Shakespeare, much of the loud boomy action takes place of stage.

The action itself, spliting between three locations, and working its way towards a nexus, is more concerned with the inner workings of human nature, and the wranglings of human condition.

For those that like SciFi with a philosphy, go for this, and much of Frank Herbert's work.
