Painful to read...am totally not into all of the made up words and time frames, unheard of names. It was a chore to follow. Granted these double sexed characters was a unique concept, I feel it just wasn't worth the tedious bother decoding all the made up words.

Wow. I am NOT a fan of reading fiction... but this book was an amazing trip. Highly recommended and in its own way very relevant to the current world. Lots of under-the-breath mythos and revelation that can be extracted from the discerning reader.

I first tried reading Le Guin's Earthsea novels, and frankly they weren't my cup of tea at all ... way too much trying to be literary, way to little story to hold my interest.

However The Left Hand of Darkness rarely falls into this trap, and instead manages to tell a compelling story and at the same time makes a coherent analysis of the role of gender in our society.

4.5 stars, only misses out on 5 stars because (mostly early in the novel) Le Guin does occasionally slip back into self indulgent mode.

One of the best sf novels ever, and probably the best one about sex. That is, sex in the sense of gender relations and roles within society, rather than explicit rumpy-pumpy. The story features an anthropologist investigating a world where people are at different times male, female or neuter. Chilly landscapes and convincing social scene. Brrr.

Although from 60s has aged quite well. But not a gripping book. Set on freezing world inhabited by altered, androgenous humans. Story of male envoy from alliance of human worlds sent to gather them back to the fold after many generations lost. Planetary set up reminiscent of cold war USA/Russia.

While not the best SF story I've read, the anthropological approach to how gender and sexual relations are socially constructed is well worth the read. And the cold setting makes me think of home.

Hard to get into, cause it's a bit confusing at first. But eventually the story centers on two main characters who form a deep and complex relationship; and by the end I felt I had just read something truly beautiful. My husband read it twice in a row.

The names of both the people and the places were difficult to get around at first, but being that this was required reading for my science fiction / fantasy literature course, I would definitely reccomend it to anyone interested in the really traditional sci fi works.
