No wonder I put off reading it for so long: I believe Heinlein treats his women characters as a sexist; although some say they are "sexually liberated" through the practice of polyamory, I believe this case of polyamory to be at the expense of the women characters. I tend to agree with another, who likes the protagonist (Mike) less and less as he becomes less Martian and more human. I will not make the mistake of reading more Heinlein.

I read the long edition...huge mistake!! This version was a struggle to get through.... all 650 pages of it. I do not mind a long book but this book was loaded with self-indulgent dialogue and philosophic discussions on nearly every subject known to man: religion, sex, law that lost me after the first couple of sentences. I could not identify with any of the 2-dimensional characters. I do not recommend the version I read to anyone I like.

The edited version might read better at least it is 150 pages shorter and that has to be one of its redeeming features.

AS far as I am concerned, this is the great American novel of the 20th Century. It should be read by every 15 year old to challenge the so-called American values, and I think it shaped the generation who read it. The fun part is that it is simply a "Man from Mars" story that takes a serious look at the sacred cows of America and barbecues them.

Think you're a liberal nut? Heinlein questions those limits and the inherent social constraints imposed on us from the day we are born.

While Heinlein does tend to shove his ideology down your throat through philosophical conversations between his characters, I found his theories to be refreshening. This novel also captures what I think is the greatest opportunity that science-fiction presents: the ability to ask fundamental what-if questions about religion and society through opportunities exposed by science and technology.

Heinlein, along with Asimov and Clark truly form the foundations of science fiction!
