Engaging comment on American racism in the 50s set during the trial of a black man for the rape of a white woman. Told from a child's viewpoint, it's simplicity is it's depth.

This is the seminal Southern novel. It's unfortunate that some libraries and schools have banned it because it contains the "n-word", which was a deliberate choice by Lee to emphasize the inapropriateness and vulgarity of the term...even though it was a common contemporary usage ("common" as in widely used by trashy people). This novel's greatest value lies in its overall lessons about life, loyalties, and the wrongs of discrimination against anyone- for race, disability, or any 'otherness'.

An amazing book about childhood adventures. Scout is quippy and sassy and Jem is over protective. Atticus is the kind of father we could all have wanted: loving, warm, a good disciplinarian, and an honest upstanding man in the community.

This is the most over-rated book of the twentieth century after 'Gone With The Wind' ; it's themes are portrayed in a narrow-minded manner, the narrative power is low and it's probably quite insulting to black people. While it does have some substance, it is too much of a 'sweet story' ; the kind that make emotional people bring forth rivers from their eyes and it is no way comparable with 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' or 'Moby Dick' as an American classic.

This, as most people know, is a book that started heated discussion in the classroom(for those of us that went to diverse public schools). I can remember talking about this book for 4 straight days in English class; the debate got so intense that our teacher threatened not to allow us to watch the movie if we didn't calm down. If you haven't read this and your over the age of 20, I don't know what's wrong with you.

My all time favorite book. I love Scout. She stands up for her what she believes is wrong not only in her heart but in humanity. A must read.

I read this book as a child, first with the Reader's Digest condensed books and would lock myself in my room and read it and reread it again and again, then when iI got older read the real version but it has lots of memories for me because that and another book by William Saroyan kept me going to a different reality and then read her biography here in WDC. And it's a book that I can read and reread and reread and never tire. Long live Scout!!!! By the way if you go down South you will see kids that do resemble Truman Capote in the cover of his first book. Must be genetic for all the South. The South is rising again!!!!!!

This to me, is one of the best books ever written. I have read it in different stages of my life, and always come away with something new that I didn't understand before. Everyone should read this book, because of the racial issues and humor. I have read this book at least 20 times, and I will read it again and again.

One of the best books I've ever read, at any age I've read it, and I have read it repeatedly. The characters are very engaging, and it has much to say on childhood, parenting, and social responsibility. I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
