Oh my god this book was great! It was incredibly scary, well written, and very suspenseful all the way up to the end. I highly recommend this book! It had be afraid to fall asleep!

Personally, I dislike horrors, but this one kept me going. Must be it's mix of mystery and horror, which makes it an edible meal (just the right amount of pepper and garlic).

Another great book by one of my favorite authors. One of three great "coming of age" dark fantasy / sf / horror novels that include Robert McCammon's "Boy's Life" and Stephen King's "It". A book I've returned to many times over the years that is still a fantastic read. Highly recommended.

I love Dan Simmons's writing... that's why I can't understand how this came out of his plume. It's way too long, gets boring and unbearably slow so often, without any real purpose (I like digressive episodes in books when they tell you something about the characters or when they are just worth writing because of their entertaining or edifying value, but this was so not the case), and the "real" story itself wasn't that gripping or interesting at all -I've read other reviews saying that Simmons was taking a leaf out of Stephen King's book, so to speak, and I agree -it's set in a small American town, and the main characters are a group of friends fighting against a big evil force-, but I think Simmons really shines when he sticks with his own voice and style, which are so enthralling and rewarding for their own worth.

Readers of both might liken Summer of Night to Stephen King's IT, but Simmons pairs his flair for storytelling with an unrelenting eloquence and an even greater sense of nostalgia. A group of youngins are forced to confront a small-town evil that shatters the otherwise idyllic summer of 1960. The story takes its good old time to develop, therein capturing the lazy, weighted pace of summer itself. But once it gets going...just read it. A classic coming-of-age tale that gives way to unimaginable horror. I should note that I don't enjoy Dan's (read: most) heavily sci-fi tales, so perahps that's why my thoughts differ from those expressed in the other iRead reviews.

Strange book filling you with thrills! Had to go BACK to lots of Simmons' other book I read BEFORE to find out about who's who! If you plunging into Simmons'oeuvre, better place this one in the first to read!

Great horror story, the type of book we could have once seen from Stephen King. One of the most enjoying and gripping horror novels I've read. Usually horror is much better suited to short fiction, but Simmons pulls it off in this lengthy novel about childhood and terror.

The first time I read this, when it was new, I wasn't crazy about it. I started it again a few nights ago when I knew I was going to fall asleep fast and would destroy my face if Drood fell on it. What a delightful surprise. I think I know what I didn't like: the pack of boys is very large and it's still hard to keep straight which one is which. But it's worth it. Excellent spooky read that reminds me of my childhood -- searching out or assigning spookiness to all manner of things and people, for the pure pleasure. Only these boys, they're a little beyond the pleasure part at the halfway point. But I'm finding more and more pleasure in reading about their adventures. Simmons' book is like a Ray Bradbury novel if Stephen King wrote it -- three times longer and more complicated but just as human and spooky. Actually, rereading. I didn't care for it when it was new.
