I traded a dress for my first copy of this book way back in the 1950's, then loaned it to a friend who did't return it. Many years later, wonder of wonders! I found one in a thrift shop. I re-read it every twenty years or so.

i was born in cali but always felt a southern kinship when i read this, the romanticism mixed with dispair and survival let me know i was southern in my heart.

The paperback edition I read had 1011 pages. I found the book to be 1000 pages too long.
