You wouldn't think a book about a guy worked in a depressing auto plant would be entertaining, but this book caused me to laugh out loud on planes, buses and street corners. He has a gift for using simple language to great effect, and making his messed up life a constant source of gallows humor.

Entertaining, and explains some of the reasons why GM got into so much trouble. Hamper puts a human face on workers who face monotony head-on day-to-day.

Hate your job? Just be thankful you don't work on the GM Trunk line. This book reminded me to not take work too seriously.

A good, not perfect book that gives a eye-opening account of life on the auto assembly line and some idea of the communities they impact. For a first title by an amateur writer, it's brilliant. By any other measure it's a little tiresome. Very worthwhile reading during the current debate about industry bailouts and the supposedly cushy lifestyles of the union workers.

Using a conversational tone (assuming you're conversing with a lunatic), Ben Hamper hilariously recalls his experiences as an assembly line worker in 1980s-era Flint, Michigan. If you read this book, you'll never, ever buy a car from GM again. But you might develop a jones for an Angelo's Coney Island hot dog...

This book is written by a guy who worked in the GM Cab & Truck Factory in Flint, Michigan in the 70's and 80's. It's pretty interesting and gives you a look into working in a car factory back then.

You need to read this book to understand why GM and Chrysler had (or will have to) file for Chapter 11. Did a summer job in a unionized factory as well, and I'd have to say then Ben Hamper isn't far fetched at all in his revelations.

Read this book by Ben Hamper and you'll understand both Michael Moore and the old GM. Classic bits: Howie Makem, the Quality Cat; Hamper working a double shift for his sleeping shift mate partner Dale.

Having worked in menial jobs myself years ago, I could relate to the mundane nature of assembly line work and the struggle against the clock. Hamper's writing style is humorous, and despite his misgivings, he writes with a sharp wit. He's definitely not your average shop rat. That being said, there's only so much interest one can have in drinking, drugs, and ducking out on work however mundane it is. The book was a quick read and shows with good humor how Henry Ford's concept of the assembly line has run amuck in the modern world. None of these revelations are earth-shattering, and the book doesn't pull you through to the climax as much as it keeps your staring at the train wreck being described. You can't help but look or read in this case.
