At first this book was feeling like Confederacy of Dunces, but somewhere in the middle I began to like it more and more. The main characters- Spooner and his step-dad Calmer-reveal a family of misfits held together by an odd sense of love and misfortune. Granted, Spooner is about as odd as they come, his dad serves as an interesting contrast as you seem them with their wives, children, and the world around them.

This is very different book from any I have ever read and, at first, I didn't think I liked it. There is nothing redeemable about the protagonist, and yet, strangely, he is very much like many different men I know. So, I guess he DOES have redeemable qualities :-) Too, it is written almost as the narrator's "stream of consciousness" which took some getting used to. But, big picture, it's funny and engaging and quirky and just plain different!

Dexter is a great writer, and Paris Trout and The Paperboy are both books I enjoyed. I read a glowing review of Spooner in the NYT, so I expected it to be good too. Unfortunately, it was pretty bad. The novel is a thinly-veiled memoir that follows Dexter's own life. There were a few laughs in there, but the characters never get any real development. The book is way too long and poorly structured. I'd recommend just skipping Spooner and reading Dexter's bio on Wikipedia. It's shorter and had better editors.

Unique narrative style, requires some acrobatics to follow but very good.

Next to The Paperboy, this has become my favorite Dexter book. Structurally, it's all over the map and there are some things I'd wish he did differently. But the story itself and the characters are great. I especially loved the ending.

I recognize this boy. Part in myself and mostly in my brother and certainly a little in everyone. His relationship with his stepfather is the saving grace.Interesting twist. Good read.

This book kept me up nights (reading it). One of the funniest I've read, and while I don't usually post these reviews, this one is just too good not to shout it from the rooftop. Irreverent, sad, hilarious, and clever in turns, in it's oddball characters and strange madness I see myself and everyone I've ever known. I'm recommending it to everyone I know. Pete Dexter writes with a claw hammer rather than a pen, and after reading it, I'll never be the same. But in a good way. YOU should read this book. You'll thank me some day.
