There was a certain character that was killed off in this book that I really liked. That was a BIG let down...

Though Special Agent Pendergast had already become a Preston/Child regular before the publication of The Cabinet of Curiosities, this volume marks the beginning of the Pendergast-as-protagonist era. It is arguably the finest and most epic of the Pendergast chronicles, as well. It's a rich, fantastically paced, harrowing murder mystery that gives way to rapid character/backstory development of the charmingly badass Pendergast. As far as Preston/Child works are concerned, The Cabinet of Curiosities marks a distinct paradigm shift from standalone technothriller to ongoing, character-driven crime drama.

This is the first book in the Pendergast novels that is really great. I highly recommend this series, but give it to book 3 before deciding if you really like it. The first 2 are easy enough reads (Relic, Reliquary)

Pendergast is a wonderfully peculiar protagonist, an FBI agent from New Orleans and old money.

I'm working my way through the series, even though I started with the Diogenes Trilogy and then had to start at the first book. Now I spend my days fantasizing about who I think could play Pendergast in a movie but I'm not sure who could do him justice! Like Robin Cook and Michael Crichton, there's always an element of "It's possible ... ". in Preston & Childs. I can't wait to get to the next one!

Pendergast #3. Good but way too long (466 pages) and a tad gruesome

For me, this book has it all. The chills, thrills, grotesque images, and the seemingly supernatural. A fantastic read that will be enjoyed by those that enjoy stories filled with things that go bump in the night!

Great read...takes some time but it was worth it. This was part of a series starting with Brimstone, then the Devil's card, finally this.
I think there are two more following this one!
Wheel of Darkness, and one that isn't out in print yet. Can't wait for more. loved it.

This was the first novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child that I read, and I absolutely fell in love with their writing. It's complex and compelling. The way Pendergast is developed throughout each book is fantastically real. He is multi-layered and mysterious like a person would be in real life, and sometimes more so than in real people. In short, he is one of the few characters that I have come across who seems real, and it is disappointing that he doesn't actually exist.

Preston does a great job at cramming a lot into a book: thrills, chills, horror, classical knowledge, even some lighthearted moments. You will not be able to put it down.
I have really enjoyed reading this series of books. This one in particular was especially engrossing. I highly recommend it!

A decent read--modern, gothic detective novel. If you like detective stories and Poe, this is a great blend of both.

Preston & Child start with an interesting premise for The Cabinet of Curiosities: what kind of wonderfully mysterious things lurk in the storage vaults of natural history museums? They toss in an eccentric (REALLY eccentric) FBI agent and an attractive (naturally) female archeologist. The result? A meandering tale that requires an epilogue to explain the backstory (isn't that what the preceding chapters were for?). Plus, this audio recording was narrated by Jonathan Marosz, king of the misplaced inflection.
