what a story. Seems like terrible punishment just for stealing food! what if he'd done something more terrible? Ups and downs, twists and turns. Loved it.

This is the abridged edition that we use at DHS. I enjoyed it much more than I expected and suspect that I would have enjoyed it less if I had read the full edition, which I might read one day anyways. I would say that I loved the character of Javert as much as I disliked the characters of Marius and Cosette. Perhaps the unabridged edition will make Marius and Cosette more interesting? Who knows?

It took me FOREVER to read this book. I have never had to put a book down, but I found myself taking breaks. Once everything becomes resolved, however, it turns out to be an awesome work of literature. A lot of history in it, though.

Read this in French when I was in college. The musical is pretty true to the story, but like most adaptations, a lot of good moments are left out. There was also a good TV movie of the story, but again many nuances and points of interest left out. If you are a French student, by all means read it in French.

the name translate to "the miserable" which probably refers to how you will feel if you read this book.

My problem is not with the story, which of course is a classic. My problem is the guy who abridged this version. I feel like he left out some pretty important details. Like, at what point did Fantine and Jean Valjean meet? And then there was the time I was like, "Who are all these people and why the heck are they building a barricade?!" Way to butcher a literary masterpiece.

My very favorite book of all time, loved it, loved it, loved it!! First time I read it I skipped chapters at a time, it seemed to go on and on. Second time I read everything and wondered how I could have missed the wonderful stories in the chapters I missed. Third time I read it, I got all the details, not a word missed. What a story, what a tragedy, enjoyed every single word of it. Can't wait to read it again!! A little harder to read that the best selling novels, but don't give up, it's fabulous!!

Took me 10 years to read this book. Of course, I was reading lots of others as well, and I'd go for long stretches without reading it. Very long, very involved and very good!

A genuine dosage of pity, pathos, piety, compassion, sacrifice, loyalty, faith, human spirit, conscience, honesty, perseverance etc. etc. all rolled in a capsule to enhance the reading appetite. Surely Hugo must be thanking the absence of USDA in his times. Strongly recommended for those who like to read the "classic".

Great book, but you need a "good parts version." The edition I had took all the chapters on nuns and sewers and put them at the back, so you could read them if you wanted, or just skip. I skipped.

I can only say that, while this book is a bit lengthy, it is absolutely amazing. I enjoyed it until the end. In most books I find the beginning to be rather boring and difficult to get through. This is false with Les Miserables. There is a new surprise in every chapter, and the plot contains so many shocks and twists, that I really couldn't put it down. This book is where I discovered my hero, my idol. Anyone who knows me probably knows who that person is. I think every person should read Les Miserables at least once in their life. It's special, it really is. The musical was absolutely breathtaking, also. It's so upsetting that it has left Broadway, but I could never, ever forget it.

Next to the Bible, my favorite. The grace of "Jean" and his ability to point to the Christ...well, Lord, help me live like that.

Whatever you do, do NOT read the unabridged version. There is no sense in it. Hugo spends the first 100 pages on developing a character who appears only in those pages. He takes 50 pages to describe the sewer system of Paris. 15 pages describing one wall on a battlefield. I'm a purist, but read the abridged version - there's no sense in slogging through over a several hundred pages of extraneous detail.
