My 2nd least favorite King book, after The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I've read almost everything else he has written and can honestly say I hated these two books. What where you thinking Stephen? If I could rate it even lower, I would.

Get your heads out of the sink. This is a great horror novel. Read everything else King has written, then come back to this novel, and you'll realize how wonderful it is. A seminal horror story that definitely sends goosebumps along your flesh.
Read everything King has written, then come back to this novel and you'll realize what you've missed out on. This is a seminal work, a glorious vision, and something we all wished we could have written.

I'm normally a huge Stephen King fan, but this book just didnt do it for me. Too sci-fi-ish for Stephen King to delve into. A good read, all around, but sort of a dissapointment as well

My third Stephen King novel and my least favorite. It's an amusing story (not necessarily in the humorous sense) and saved by King's writing style. However, the plot was ridiculous at times, and character development was all over the place. You meet Bobbi Anderson at first, and I thought she'd be our main character. You get a few chapters on her and move on to the drunk, whom is nothing less than loathsome but is the only decent character in the story. After that, dozens of different characters are shoved down your throat, and they mean nothing to us in the way of attachment. They simply further the story a little more.

Its sheer ludicrousness diminishes the power of so many potent scenes.

This book was a tour de force. Stephen king has made me never want to ever visit the area of central Maine. He must HATE that freakin place. It's kind of hard to review this book because there is so much to it. King clearly also has a deep connection with animals, because Bobbi's relationship with Peter is what disturbs Gardner the most and ultimately keeps him in the game. A hell of a story about Gardner moving towards retribution within himself, as by the end of it absolutely no one is there to see it.

The scariest part is all the nuclear energy info. If you research it you'll find there was a lot of bungling by people who weren't properly trained. The Idaho National Laboratory accident comes to mind. The tech moved the control rod too far, killing 3 and causing extensive radiation contamination.

Everyone raves that Stephen King is such an amazing author, but to be honest, I was really bored with this book. I expected a spine tingling, chilling tale of aliens or the like, but this book was about a bunch of deranged aliens that fought over control of a ship, crashed it and millions(or however many years later) of years later, some loner writer woman, discovered it. Her drunk friend(who was the only decent character in the story) came back and discovered she was changing. Then most of the entire town changed into transparent onions that just so happened to be really smart.

Just the name was scary, it had such potential to be a very scary story, with decent characters and an amazing plot. But it fell on its face. Hard. Then got killed by that deranged coke machine.

Some good moments, good premise, and the usual great Stephen King characterization. Beyond that? Not so much good here. I don't need a hundred pages or so dedicated to the horrors of nuclear power or self-indulgent dinner party scenes. It was almost a waste getting to know Bobby, and our hero took over five hundred pages to sober up enough to bring closure to the book. It's got some good stuff in it, but it seems like he could have shaved a few hundred pages off. Such is the curse of King. I appreciate The Stand and Salem's Lot more after reading this book.

This book is the definition of crazy. I like how unconventionally the story is told. It expresses how alien the situation really is. I love how each of the townspeople has an almost completely different experience based on their own inner lives. This is typical of King, but here it gets it's due in a cool way.

The ending is super-depressing, though. Seriously, it's a huge bummer, you'll feel bad.

It took me two readings to really enjoy this book.

In short, a young writer finds something buried in her yard (well, forests count as yards I suppose somewhere on the planet) and starts to digg. Then the entire city changes and when her friend comes and checks up on her, he seems to be the only one unaffected.

Well done book imo. (movie wasn't all that bad either)

The biggest issue with this book is the lack of a clear protagonist through the majority of the book. The story starts off being Bobbi's story, but the focus shifts to Jim Gardner, Bobbi's friend. However, King continually shifts the story to other random people. Now, as an avid read of King, I know this is a style he uses at times. By the last 100 pages, we KNOW who the protagonist is, and we're cheering him on.

The story is sci-fi/horror. Yes, the Tommyknockers are aliens, but this isn't kept a secret. Our characters think this nearly from the beginning. And some truly horrific things happen along the way. Lots of blood, vomit, and teeth falling out.

With that said, it's a very entertaining book. There are a lot of fun connections to The Talisman, Dead Zone, Firestarter, It, and many other Derry cross-overs.

Some of the backstory for Gardner gets a little slow, but I think that's only because of what has been happening in the book up to that point. The book constantly changes paces and it seems as though it's aware that it does so.
