The Shawshank movie was better than the story, believe it or not. Apt Pupil was awesome. The Body was cool, The breathing method was meh. Middle two stories are the best.

Fair easy to spot, that these stories are some of Kings early works, but they are still a good read :-)

A collection of great short stories, and at the time they came out were so shockingly different from Kings standard at the time. I had read this book before any of the stories became movies. I am very glad it worked out that way. While the movies were good, reading and conjuring up my own visuals while reading these stories was an awesome get away without having Hollywood draw me their own pictures to each story.

Has some of King's better short stories in it. Particularly "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "The Body".

I received this book as a gift many, many years ago (from someone delicious). It remains one of my favorites, the storytelling for Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body is great. Both translated onto film well. Apt Pupil was a good story, but the movie was lacking.

This was a book for a summer course that I dropped, but I kept this book because I wanted to read "The Body," but I kept putting it off.
"Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" - Fantastic. King made me feel like I was in the prison -- or, more specifically, tarring the roof in the hot sun -- with the inmates. There was just enough information to care about the characters but only so much that they and their motives remained a mystery.
"Apt Pupil" - I really hated this story, and it was the longest of the four. It was just too dark and too disturbing. The smell of rotting bodies on a hot summer day? The nightmares of victims clawing at the protagonists (antiheroes, I guess)? Yuck. Too much.
"The Body" - My absolute favorite. The movie Stand by Me is based on this story; I've always loved the movie, and it stayed true to the book. The characters were wonderful. The narration was spot-on: I cringed and gagged over the part with the leeches. My favorite part was the layers to the story. The narrator is speaking from the vantage point of a writer (the reader becomes a participant in a conversation with the writer). The narrator (or King, I don't know) comments on his craft as a means to understand and live with tragedies and tribulations in life and uses the plot as a launching pad for his commentary. Whatever ... I can ramble about the awesomeness of the story and the themes forever. Just read it.
"Breathing Method" - The shortest story. It's okay, I guess. Kinda weird. Also, kind of funny to have a man say that the pain of childbirth is all mental.
