Fair easy to spot, that these stories are some of Kings early works, but they are still a good read :-)

A collection of great short stories, and at the time they came out were so shockingly different from Kings standard at the time. I had read this book before any of the stories became movies. I am very glad it worked out that way. While the movies were good, reading and conjuring up my own visuals while reading these stories was an awesome get away without having Hollywood draw me their own pictures to each story.

Has some of King's better short stories in it. Particularly "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "The Body".

I received this book as a gift many, many years ago (from someone delicious). It remains one of my favorites, the storytelling for Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body is great. Both translated onto film well. Apt Pupil was a good story, but the movie was lacking.

I received this book as a gift years, years ago and it is one of my favorites from Stephen King. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption and the Body are great and made the transition to the big screen well. Apt Pupil didn't translate as well as a movie...

This was a book for a summer course that I dropped, but I kept this book because I wanted to read "The Body," but I kept putting it off.
"Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" - Fantastic. King made me feel like I was in the prison -- or, more specifically, tarring the roof in the hot sun -- with the inmates. There was just enough information to care about the characters but only so much that they and their motives remained a mystery.
"Apt Pupil" - I really hated this story, and it was the longest of the four. It was just too dark and too disturbing. The smell of rotting bodies on a hot summer day? The nightmares of victims clawing at the protagonists (antiheroes, I guess)? Yuck. Too much.
"The Body" - My absolute favorite. The movie Stand by Me is based on this story; I've always loved the movie, and it stayed true to the book. The characters were wonderful. The narration was spot-on: I cringed and gagged over the part with the leeches. My favorite part was the layers to the story. The narrator is speaking from the vantage point of a writer (the reader becomes a participant in a conversation with the writer). The narrator (or King, I don't know) comments on his craft as a means to understand and live with tragedies and tribulations in life and uses the plot as a launching pad for his commentary. Whatever ... I can ramble about the awesomeness of the story and the themes forever. Just read it.
"Breathing Method" - The shortest story. It's okay, I guess. Kinda weird. Also, kind of funny to have a man say that the pain of childbirth is all mental.

What an amazing collection!! By far some of the best King has written. Even though these are not tales of "horror" they certainly have horrific moments.

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption: Such a well written story. No wonder the movie is so great. It is a solid tale. I won't waste too much of the review here. The movie follows the story very closely. Some characters are added and combined to the film, but the overall story is almost exact. Watch the movie and read this!!

Apt Pupil could very well be one of the most haunting and horrifying stories I've ever read. It feels a bit like a Bachman book, but even better. One monster brings out a long dormant monster in this Nazi horror story. The decline of sanity in the characters is truly disturbing.

The Body: so good. The movie is another faithful adaptation, but the story has a little more going for it. Wonderful!

The Breathing Method: is King's "horror story" of the collection. Though I still don't think of it as such. Here we see some indirect ties to the Dark Tower. There is an idea here that King goes on to explore in depth later in his writing. Overall, the tale is good. And quite likable.

Overall, if I had to classify a running theme throughout each of these 4 novellas, it would be friendship. Andy & Red in Shawshank, Todd and Dussander in Apt Pupil (even though it is sickening, it is still a thriving friendship!), Gordie & Chris in The Body, and McCarron and Miss Stanfield in Breathing Method. Each story fully explores these friendships, as well as others. What it means to love, give love, feed off one another, and take care of someone is all covered within these pages.

Such a great collection!
