Good but kind of gross. It seemed to wrap up really quickly for such a long book.

Personally I think Stephen King is a very talented writer, although some may think his stories are horror filled and terrifying. His books all seem to have the strong ability to keep the reader entertained. I finished this book in three days simply due to the fact that I didn't want to put it down (this was actually my second time reading it!) It's characters are described so well, you as the reader have zero problem picturing them leaving little detail unseen. A great book, I would recommend to even the least of a King fan.

 This was a fantastic read.
The biblical struggle between good and evil with the mystery of working out what is divine intervention, ambition, fate and chance.

Desperation is a small mining town in which circumstance, or providence, sees a variety of characters taken, where they discover Desperation is no ordinary town.... A tragic incident has occured which sees them thrown deeply in the poop, and they must escape it.

King creates characters so wonderfully, you swear you see them on the street and you know them. No other writer does it so well, and certainly noone writes horror novels with his ability to create a sense of reality in the characters.

Highly recommended!

An AMAZING book, that starts out as a typical stephen king twisted story line, filled with blood and murder, but ends up making the reader question his own religious and moral fibers. The main character, David, battles with profound and very complex religious issues, and in the end faces them with an unnatural maturity..king captures the innocence of a child, and mingles it with an almost god sent hability to discern between right and wrong. Its definately up there with IT and Misery.. King at his best, no doubt about that

What I don't like about Stephen King, is that he describes things for pages and pages. It's a bit long (for my taste), he could just shorten his description and the n I would be more interested. The book was good until I got fed up with the descriptions.
There was too much description in this book, except for the gory parts, they were excellent.

Produced some great literary imagery, but I found the story somewhat lacking. However, it being Stephen King, I couldn't help but like it somewhat.

As per usual, King delivers another great story with deep, fleshed out characters and satisfying action throughout. The first 100 pages or so are very interesting, as they basically examine the reactions of a dozen or so different people to different traumatic experiences. This is an interesting way to begin the novel, because it lays the groundwork for the characters that become important later in the novel in an organic way. The setting of the story stands out for a King work, as he departs from the woods of Maine or a large city for a Western mining town. This departure makes the work stand out, and also allows King to easily paint a picture of a place where Tak could take hold.

The most interesting part of the whole novel to me is the character of Johnny Marinville. I can't figure out of this character is supposed to be King himself, what King wishes he was, or everything that King hates. I guess it could be a combination of the three. He clearly has a sense of disdain for Marinville, as the young version of the character is the Yankee fan, although that could just feed into the elitist aspect of Marinville's personality. Marinville's famous works also seem to be a bit snobby and pretentious, and he loves the notoriety he has gained from this but also claims to be no more than a storyteller and calls it his real addiction, even though he has clearly had problems with drugs, alcohol, and women. In the end, Marinville is only truly alive before and after he embraces his notoriety, not during the time he does. There is a certain sense of selling one's soul for fame and fortune.

In this deeply disturbing look at ghost towns, we see an unlikely group of heroes gathering to do battle against a timeless evil. Sounds like most Stephen King novels right? But this one has an interesting twist...A young boy becomes the spiritual leader and head of the rescue team. That alone is not atypical of King. He tends hold the "child-like faith" in high esteem. But here we see, not just child-like faith in anything, but an actual Christian message. The boy defeats the darkness through his faith in Jesus of the Bible and restores and renews the faith of an old, hardened alcoholic along the way. As usual, King has managed to address more than just the surface level horror of our deep fears and really touch our hearts through this novel.

Despiration the creepy mining town where the evil takes over after its distrurbed during new excavations of a caved in mine.

I really loved this book. The characters especially, the incredably brutallity and dominance of the possesed police man, the blind faith of the young boy tring to save his family, that regret and wise nature of the old biker guy. The story as whole is effortlessly craved out and flows really well with the characters interacting and behaving appropraitely as possible in the emmense situation.

Stephen king really shows the brutallity and depraved supernatural prowess of a superb horror novel. i have both chills and a huge grin reading this.

2 thumbs up!!!

This novel was published by Stephen King in the same year as King published ‘The Regulators’ under his Richard Bachman pen name. The two novels represent parallel universes relative to one another, and most of the characters present in one novel's world also exist in the other novel's reality, albeit in different circumstances.

The story has us follow the tale of a group of people taken captive by the local town sheriff and jailed, which after seeing the murders he committed to other town members makes them the lucky ones. We follow as they attempt to escape from what they come to realize was not the town sheriff at all, but instead a demonic ‘god-like’ creature possessing his body and using it to do it’s bidding. At the head of the group, we follow a boy who has come to have a close connection with God and what ensues is a tale about the trials that God will put his most faithful through in order to achieve the results he desires most. If you are a big fan of the book ‘It,’ then you’ll love this book because of its similarities to the demonic creatures in both tales.

The book is a slightly under seven-hundred pages, but is an extremely tough one to put down, forcing me to finish reading it in roughly 3 days time, forcing myself to make time for it because I wanted to see what was going to happen next, and most importantly how everything was going to end. It’s one of the best novels I have read in a long time, and that should mean something to most people that know me.

This is my absolute favourite, have read parts of it more than once! Of all the everyday heroes/heroines that King has ever had David is the interesting. Good and evil do battle and although the ending is what one would want, the road there is a demanding one. This one above all other King novels makes for the best ending as doing the right thing sometimes means paying an enormous price. The religious thread which ran through this book makes it more fascinating especially as many people like to throw King off as simply a horror writer. This one goes much deeper than just slice 'em and dice 'em with an extra topping of fantasy.

This book is a lot like religion I guess...you have to take a lot on faith - a lot of Deux ex machina in this one. But unlike many others by King, it flows in a real time narrative which keeps the pages turning and the imagination is clearly 'King-sized'.
