Miss Marple as an avenging angel is a fascinating portrait. However, you must read A Carribean Mystery first.

I read the entire Agatha Christie collection as a teenager. I remember them as being very entertaining, and badly translated into Portuguese. And no, I did not have anything better to do at the time (or so I thought). Anyway, I loved the suspense, the middle-upper class settings , and a lot of the characters - not necessarily the detectives.

"Nosso codigo, minha senhora, e a palavra NEMESIS". Sentada na grande poltrona diante da lareira de sua casa na cidadezinha de St. Mary Mead, Miss Jane Marple repetia em voz baixa, para si mesma, a estranha frase, que lhe evocava um outro cenario. Agora ela era de novo o codigo de um pedido de socorro - mas por um motivo que Miss Marple ignorava e para um assunto do qual nada sabia! Livro surpreendente do inicio ao fim.

Disini miss marple berperan sebagai nemesis: dewi keadilan..sebab keadilan tidak selalu lembut.. namun juga bisa mengejutkan!!

Maybe I've read too many Agatha Christies, or maybe this one was just too predictable. I worked out who dunnit shortly after being introduced to that character. Still, a good story, and I liked the concept of Miss Marple going off to solve a mystery that she knew nothing about.

Ok, here goes.The version I just read has a essay by the Christie Biographer. I've just learned that one of my all time favorite Christie books wasn't quite as good as I thought it was. Here goes, and while I'm not going to straight out say who done it, I am basically going to give away the ending, so if you don't want to know, don't read this. I always loved this story because of the story, and the theme. The details are not the best drawn together, I admit that. I've also always loved how a dead character has such a deep affect on the story itself. especially since it isn't a character that is directly invovled in the story. He's more a spider on his web. But the theme, Love is a frightening thing, is so well done. The idea that an unhealthy mother/child love can destroy someone so completely is amazing. And the fear and pain that lingers after the murder and how it continues to destroy. How a woman needs an adult relationship after a certain age. That a permanent child relationship isn't healthy, and that moving on to an adult couple relationship is what is needed. And how that can destroy the mother figure. This to me has always been insightful. This is something that has formed how I think of unhealthy loves of all types, friends, couples, families. This concept of Christie's was formative. Evidently, I am an oblivious idiot. This mother/daughter relationship was actually supposed to be a lesbian affair. Which means all this I've built up about unhealthy love is really just some lover's quarrel where the one decided to move on to a new partner and the other got mad. While I love the book, the idea of it is just kinda ruined. Now instead of it being about coming of age, and how people grow up and move on, it becomes a strong attack on the evils of lesbianism. So while I can see the parts I loved, its lost the amazing power I always saw in it.

Now, if you wish to have a little guided tour around old houses in England; or to explore the intricate aspects of strong emotions, Nemesis will thrill you throughout. There were so many possibilities towards the murderer; and it made me ponder about the grief and pain of loss.
