Whilst many would view this book as a revelation about the Mafia, it also tells a different story. It reflects about family and the effects that had to be borne living in a dangerous world. 'The Godfather' personifies the patriachy which lives and dies by the sword. It also reflect the differing views on 'the family business' from one of constant warfare to one which provides an invaluable albeit illegal alternative service to a particular segment of society. There will always be a provider of such services, whether organised crime, politics or economy. 'The Godfather' reflects just one facet of this world. A must read.

I put off reading THE GODFATHER for the longest time, until one of the eight Italian boys named Anthony I went to high school with in Detroit (Anthony Bologna was one of them -- I'm not kidding) made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

THE GODFATHER is the godfather of all fiction about the Cosa Nostra in America. All the mythology about the Mafia's familial hierarchy, rigid code of silence (omertà) and inevitable expansion into legitimate and criminal activity come from Mario Puzo's books and the wildly popular movie series they spawned. The book is about assimilation into American life, the Oedipal father/son and fraternal wars that define powerful families, and the heartbreak that comes to innocent parties from living and associating with gangsters whose lives are unconstrained by criminal law. We have Puzo to thank for two indelible fictional characters -- Don Corleone, the Godfather, who brings the Sicilian Mafia way of life with him to Hell's Kitchen and becomes the most powerful gang ruler in America through sheer ruthlessness and cunning, and his son Michael, a war hero and innocent who becomes initiated into the business at a critical time in the family's history and comes to surpass them all with his intelligence, ingenuity and the force of personality. Without Michael and Vito Corleone there would be no Tony Soprano. The GODFATHER movies, needles to say, are even better than the books, and their quotes are part of the fabric of popular culture in this country. Take the book. Leave the canoli.
