Think anything by Edmund Rutherford, but following a much shorter time period, with a lot more sex and violence. This was a super fun read, almost as compelling as Twilight (!!) with a tremendous amount of detail on the construction of cathedrals. However, the sensibilities and opinions of the characters were fairly modern, and there was such a huge cast of characters that our knowledge of most of them was quite shallow. Credit to Follett for acknowledging in his preface that "my biggest problem as a writer is that I'm not a tortured soul," so I knew what I was likely to get at the outset. Credit also to him for carrying out a thrilling account of the building of a medieval cathedral that only mentioned London once -- an unlikely feat. All in all, thumbs up.

Such a completely different genre for Follett--I had never read anything of his;having read a book review, just knew I had to read this and was not one bit sorry--the sequel was just as wonderful.

Wonderful read. The British history buff in me shrieked with delight through the whole book. It was compelling and engaging. Unfortunately the sequel World without End was not nearly as compelling.

I am listening to this book via Audible. A very intriguing story so far. It certainly seems to capture the reality of living in those days as a laborer roaming the country looking for work as you go along.
