Good book. Good series. Lots of vampire action, lots of romance. The only thing that was a downer on this series was the fake ghetto talk the author indulged in. When I picture ancient vampires I just don't imagine them using "Gansta" talk. Especially when the author is a cute little blonde woman from the South. She just doesn't get it right! Still, the plots are good and the books worth the reading.
Yay! I love finding new vampire/paranormal books to read. This one was very well written with a decent plot and plenty of steamy sex. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Dark Lover-Wrath is a gorgeous, six feet six inches of maleness. And, he is the King of the Vampires, the only purebred left, and the Head of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. He is lethal danger walking. This book follows Beth, a half-human/half-vampire-who is not aware that she is close to turning into a Vamp & you then have Vampire Series That Entertains!!!, and though I have never been a keen fan of Paranormal Romance, I was blown away. The action, romance, adventure, and complexity is wonderful. I'm already planning a trip to the bookstore this evening to buy "Lover Eternal"

This is the first novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. This is the story of Wrath - the last purebred vampire left on earth and King of his people. He is the essentially blind leader of a band of six lethal warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Together, these warriors hunt the Lessening Society - the souless vampire slayers who murdered Wrath's parents centuries ago.

Wrath is stunned when a fellow warrior - Darius - asks him to protect and guide Darius' halfbreed daughter - a supposed orphan - into a heritage of which she has no knowledge. Beth Randall has been suffering inexplicable chills and hunger pangs that she cannot satify. She also can not deny the instant attraction she feels for Wrath when she meets him. Now, as Beth nears the precipice of her change the only one who can help her is Wrath.

I loved this paranormal romance debut from a terrific author and will be looking for more books from this series. I give it five stars!

This book blew me away. I have read a lot of fluff- I like fluff. I like vampire genre. Books with 300+pages that I can breeze thru in 4 hours or less. NOT THIS BOOK.
I didn't skim, I didn't fast-forward. I actually read this book and was sucked into the world created by Ward. I was riveted by the depth of the characters woven artfully so you felt what they were feeling, learning as they were learning. Fantastic.
I am not so set in my ways that I can't hack a new spin on Vampire Lore. This does put a spin and a twist on the same-ol, same-ol vampire stories. Great read.

My first paranormal romance book. I LOVE IT...A refreshing look on the vampire race. Irrestible albeit scolding of bad language
Reccomended by friends. My first paranormal romance book. Not including Twilight Saga. This is uncomparable.
Black Dagger Brotherhood blown my mind away. I love the world created by J R Ward. The band of brothers protecting their race against enemies - lessers.
J R Ward is fantastic. She can understand and converse each and every character's personalities and emotions vividly. A totally page-turner.

The BDB series was my first foray into vamp fic. Honestly? I didn't know what people found so great about vampires, thought they were just cold-blooded bloodsuckers out to entrance and then suck you dry. Boy, was I wrong! This series is sexy, but it is also profoundly... human. Now, about this book in particular, whoa, did Wrath get some quick or what? But otherwise, the pacing was great, the side stories were great, and I hate lessers. All is good in the BDB world, especially the Brothers :D
So... impulsive, but I loved it :) *bows to the greatness that is JR Ward*

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I was looking for a new author of paranormal romance and she is IT!! I loved the story of Wrath and Beth, espeically the flaws of Wrath. I always enjoy seeing the fall of a man who is supposedly so strong and deadly. Give right him the right woman and he cracks! lol. Can't wait to read the rest.

oh, and you know, you kinda forget how odd their names are by second chapter.

Also, I encouage those who like this to read Christine Feehan's "Dark Series" with Carpathians. I want to know if anyone else sees the parallels I saw in both series. (Feehan's was first by the way.)

I liked it much better towards the middle and end. The story seemed to lack steam in the beginning. However, I find the brothers annoyingly misogynistic. I hate the way they talk to women. "What do you want female?" such non sense just gets under my skin. Other dialogue simply makes me laugh out loud, "Oh Wrath, my love." I like romance, but this was a bit cliche. Overall it wasn't a completely horrible read. There were some aspects that I really enjoyed, such as the dynamics between the lessers and the brothers. The entire mythical world is intriguing with the King, the last of the pure vampires and the scribe virgin. The terminology and setting created by the author is wonderful. The book itself is still your typical formulaic romance novel. I will finishing reading book 2, but not the others. I love the idea of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but not the stories that become of it.

 Addicting, sexy, funny, entertaining.
However, you may be initially put off by the author's odd choice of names for the Brothers. I know I definitely had trouble keeping track of who's who. Their names are weird and there are a lot of them to keep track of, each with their own set of gifts and issues but stick with it. The language (doggen, lesser, shellan etc.) was also a bit of an issue at first but thankfully, Ward has included a glossary of terms which by the end of the book I found I no longer needed.

Additionally, this novel will keep you entertained with a beautiful combination of passionate romance, vampire fantasy, and violence. It's a romance with a truly developed plot and back story. The entire series is awesome and I highly recommend it to all the readers out there that are looking for REAL MANLY vampires that don't sparkle but do cause some major sparks in the bedroom. Needless to say, this book will satisfy a wide female audience. :)

 SECOND REVIEW:
I re-read this after joining a BDB fan club event at GoodReads and I'm glad I did. I was able to appreciate it more, the emotions I haven't felt before I felt now because I was immersed in J.R. Ward's world of vampires. I was able to see clearly and understand the things like how difficult it was for Wrath and Beth. It's true what they say - the bigger they are, the harder they fall. In this case, I loved the part where Wrath didn't hide how he truly loves Beth after kissing her in front of the Brothers.

Since this is just a re-read, I won't delve into the details except to say that from 3 stars, I now give this a 5. It was a good starter and Ms Ward does know how to captivate her readers, keep them, and make them hungry for more.

FIRST REVIEW:
This is the first J.R. Ward book I've read and I wasn't disappointed. The series was recommended to me by a friend I met in Facebook, who's also into paranormal romance. Several months passed before I got copies of the black dagger brotherhood series, because I'm taking a rest from reading vampire stuff.

I'm glad I read this because it's a change of pace. I really appreciate the vocab in the first part of the book, though I wasn't able to absorb all the terms, I at least had a grasp of the significant ones. Ward's writing style was easy to read, and this whole slew of characters, this new world of vampires was creative in a way that they're not really immortal, and they're easier to kill. I got used to their terms pretty quickly.

Unlike other vampire novels, werewolves aren't the enemy. I can't help but compare this to Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter novels. The Lessers reminded me of Daimons, with their blond hair and pale skin, but the distinction was the scent of baby power - now that was something new.

So, to get to the characters - one could really get used to them. Unfortunately, big, bulky men with long hair don't do it for me; which again reminds of SK's DH novels, and don't forget the leather too. One could distinguish between the BDB and DH by the music taste, they really dig rappers a lot. I don't mean to drag the review but I wasn't really into the hype.

The main story was Wrath helping Beth in her transition and in between that a lot of things happened, and were happening. Like the enemy on the move, the pointless murders, and it just didn't involve me in it. Sure I was touched with other characters, amused by them especially Fritz. I like Butch as I read further, he and Marissa deserve each other, I'm looking forward to reading their story.

Wrath and Beth's love story was just OK, he really did things for her, made sacrifices, and got mushy in front of the boys, which was a really big deal. I also liked the humor and sex scenes, there were just enough, but enough to burn the pages. Ward doesn't take the time to write more details unlike other authors when it comes to those, but still, I'll read the rest of the series.

Vampires live amongst us. But they're very much alive. Sexy, original and addictive. That's what the BDB novels are. Immerse yourself in a new world of vampires. One of the best built and believable of them all in my opinion. Wrath, the blind king who does not want to be king. Don't fool yourself, being blind is not a disability, he is deadlier and sexier than any other man. At least that's the way Beth sees it. Meet and fall in love with the whole crew of brothers and welcome to the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

This book was pretty good. I like John and Xeth.. I read on JR's site some years ago that she included a homosexual scene involving the Omega but the publisher yanked it out. She later published it on her site.

It seems she is headed that direction again, but this time (probably due to the wild success of the series) the homosexual stuff wasn't removed though it was not explicit. So now we have two brothers in love.

The writing is good as always. In fact, some may say writing this well done is wasted in the romance genre. (She also writes and wins awards (Columbus Ohio Romatic Times Convention)for writing inspirational romance.) Bet ya didn't know that....haha.

So all in all a good read. It focused on the couple just enough and wasn't all about the next book.

Rock on JR.

Have you ever met a person and made a snap judgment about them based on something trivial, such as their hairstyle, or their irritating laugh? If you hung around and gave them a chance, you might find that there is a lot more under the surface, maybe even enough that you ended up being great friends. That is the case with Dark Lover. If we can warn you about one thing, we will warn you to keep reading despite the campy names for the members of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Because even though they may make you cringe with their cheesiness, the writing is otherwise so engaging that it can be easily overlooked.

Those of us that love the erotic nature of vampire fiction will not be disappointed with Dark Lover. The romantic scenes are believable, torrid, and written with a flair too rarely seen in most erotic fiction. It is worth noting that the erotic scenes do not seem trite or misplaced. Too often we are faced with either too much or too little, and we felt that this title had a lovely balance.

The story itself has all the elements of a classic vampire tale, except for classic vampires. In fact, Ward’s take on the vampire mythos will challenge everything that you expect from vampires, in such a way as to keep you guessing about their motives. The only complaints we had were that the glossary seems a bit daunting at the beginning of the story (thought it is really hardly needed), and of course the odd names. Great writing, wonderful sex scenes, and a great ending make this a must read!

Overall, I really like the world and the possibilities that JR Ward has created here. Some of the Brothers are Hot-with-a-capital-H! I was a little iffy on some of the character development with Wrath in particular, especially at the beginning (he was a little too hard-edged, to the point where I didn't like him enough to care what happened to him), but from a character named Wrath, I had to take that with a grain of salt ;) Nice start to what I know will be an exciting series, and I am already chomping at the bit for book 2 since Rhage is my fan fave!

This series is a great if you are looking for a fun way to spend a relaxing afternoon. It's a very easy read and the characters draw you in. There's enough of a supernatural thriller theme running through it to keep it from being a pure romance novel, but the romance is definitely what makes it interesting. I found myself hurrying through the suspense scences to get back into the evolving love stories. This is almost like a VERY adult version of Twilight, but without the great character development. You won't fall in love with these vampires like you would Edward, but you'll enjoy spending a couple nights with them.

I should have know better. I'm not a romance novel reader. A friend recommended this series to me. She told me that if I liked Twilight, then I was sure to like this. She went on and explained what it was about. So I decided to give it a try. I guess it wasn't too bad, but it just wasn't my thing.

The different take on vampires was what kept me going through this book. Born into vampirism instead of being made was different. Though it does take away from the basis of vampirism a little. On the other side of that, there were so many new terms that I was trying to learn from the little glossary in the front of the book that I started to get frustrated with all the flipping back and forth.

I don't think that I would recommend this unless it was to someone that really liked romance novels.

Well...Let me just say that any group of vampires that listen to Jay Z and 2 Pac is automatically cool in my book! I enjoyed Ward's spin on the vampire world. Her vampires are more human-like than any others I've encountered. They're not former humans that have been transformed into an "undead" immortal state. They are simply a separate species. They actually live and breathe. They are flesh and blood. They are NOT immortal, however they do live a really REALLY long time. They are born vampires rather than having been changed into vampires. In Ward's world, the only way to be a vampire is to be born one - humans cannot be transformed. They have superhuman strength and supernatural gifts, and are able to heal faster than humans. They feed on blood which comes from very different and interesting source, but they also need human food to survive.

This book is about an elite group of warriors called the Black Dagger Brotherhood that protects vampire society from another group of non-human beings whose mission it is to eradicate the vampire species. It's an introduction to the Brothers and their society, as well as the story of Wrath and Beth, their King and Queen. If you are offended by cursing and fairly graphic sex, this book is not for you as it is rather adult at times. I've read that some readers were distracted by the Brother's names (Wrath, Phury, Zsadist, etc) and were not able to enjoy the story because the names seemed ridiculous. I wasn't bothered at all by that aspect of the story. These are the Brotherhood warrior names. The "civilian" vampires have normal sounding names. This book was fun and exciting and I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

This was my first 'real' vampire book as I'm not sure Twilight counts. While there were things I liked more about it compared to Twilight there were also others things I like about Twilight more such as transitioning to becoming a vampire, it seemed rather quick and painless compared to Twilight where Meyer goes into a lot of detail about how painful the process is. It was definitely an adult vampire book as the sex scenes are more descriptive! I enjoyed it but wouldn't say I loved it (hence the 3* rating). I will continue to read the rest of the series.
