A little over-the-top with this one. Bentley spent way too much time on the cheap thrills ("pantyless" cheerleaders), when he could have been fleshing out the origins of the original Principle and the school.

Ughh... Bentley has cookie-cuttered his style. I swear he picks a topic out of a hat and attempts to make it malevolent.

The academy was yet another anti-climatic read from Little. Unfortunatly he didn't have an evil antogonist that could have made the story memorable. You know, a character to save the story.

We only get one read from Little a year and he pulls out this flop? I want my 8 dollars back!

In between his novels a fan might also want to check in on his favorite writer... Nope, not Little. He doesn't interact with fans. No website. No conferences. No seminars.

Little has lost his spark. I just don't feel any passion. The academy was uninspired and his interaction with fans is non existant.

I might check out next years submission. But then again, maybe I won't.

Aside from a few minor plot holes, this book was a fairly quick read and disturbing in the general idea (public high school that goes charter and begins enforcing some unethical and frightening policies and procedures). Will definitely add Mr. Little to my list of "must read" authors.

I could not even get through this book. For me, it was a nightmare, and not in the good way... Sorry folks.

Now, I'm generally a fan of Bentley Little ... and this book has some of the classic Bentley Little themes in it: 1. Haves v. Have-Nots; 2. A smarmy psychotic leader with fascist tendencies that is the embodiment of evil and with his/her destruction the evil controling the natural world breaks away; 3. gore and twisted sexuality ... etc.

With that said, it took a lot for me to push through this book. OK, we get it ... Bentley's not a fan of charter schools. Most of the book just felt like a dissertation on the hidden perils that could be lurking in a school's charter. Hey, look, he does make valid points ... but let's remember, this is supposed to be a horror novel, and an editorial on the benefits of unionization is better suited for the op-ed page of a major newspaper.

THE ACADEMY is not horrible like DOMINION or THE ABDUCTION (sorry Bentley, but when I got to the ends of those two books, I felt like Monty opened up curtain number 2, and the mocking mute trumpets heralded the month's supply of Turtle Wax that was my prize) ... but it's just not as good as THE HOUSE, or ACADEMY'S older brother, THE RESORT.
