This book is not for the faint of heart! I was mesmerized by this book when I first read it. The characters are captivating, particularly Daemon Sadi, and the world was so new so intricate that I was blown away by it. I had never read a novel like it before and I doubt I'll ever find another quite like it again. The great pain, so many thousands of years of suffering that some of the characters go through and holding out with all that you have because you have this precious spark of hope... I was moved! It's a fantastic read and the fantastic start to a beautiful and intricate series!

I'm just slightly in love with Daemon. And Lucivar. Just a tad - lol! Excellent story. I'm so glad I picked this up. I couldn't sleep until I'd finished it - even though I had to be up in 5 hours! I also immediately had to start reading Heir to the Shadows. Bishop seriously pulled me into her story, it's not putdownable at all. You need to know what will happen next, and you'll find yourself screaming (out loud!!) at the characters because of their idiocy, their right and wrong choices, and the heartbreak they're forced to endure. Nevertheless, you can't stop hoping. READ IT!

This trilogy is my favorite of all time. I have read it over and over again, just ask anyone who lives with me. It's an amazing story and I absolutely love the world and all the intricate ways in which it works between Blood and landens, social rank, jewel rank, long-lived vs short-lived races. Everything blends so well and I couldn't ask for anything more. This book is the beginning of it all, and it's gripping from the beginning to the end.

Mixed feelings about this book.It was well-imagined and had a good pace, but I found her writing quite cheesy.I wouldn't recommend reading this after reading an Umberto Eco book. (Which I did!)

At any rate, I wish I could have rated it 2.5 out of 5 but that doesn't seem to be possible with this rating system. There is a fair chance I'll read the rest in the trilogy at some point in time.

The start of an amazing series that you won't forget! Hard to put down. It is dark but you must read the whole series to understand the importance of the darkness.

I picked up this book due to the high praise that was given to the series by my friends. I'm glad that I did, as it's a very rich world with some interesting little twists. There are a few things that leave my scratching my head after this first novel, and I wish that there had been a little more explanation in some places, but all in all it is a very good beginning to a story.

The characters tend to be rather angry a lot and there is a lot of violence and twisted desires floating around, but such things are to be expected from a dark fantasy such as this one. I will say there there was an instance or two when I became rather uncomfortable with the subject matter, so it isn't a series for the faint of heart by any means. The characters do tend to catch hold though, and make me want to know more about them.

All in all, it was a good book if you enjoy that kind of dark fantasy with a lot of sexual overtones, and don't mind being rather confused for a while.

Favorite quotes/passages:

Jaenelle looked baffled. She shrugged. "Men. Boys. What's the difference? They're all males."

"Bastard," Kartane said softly, walking toward the terrace to keep from being dragged there.
"By birth and by temperament," Daemon agreed with amiable coldness.

Love this whole trilogy - great character development, although by the end of the 3rd book, you'd say to yourself "alright, let's go on, already!"

Some explanations are a bit repetitive, but I guess it's there for the benefit of those reading out of sequence, and to make the book self-contained.

All around, extremely recommended for either seasoned fantasy readers, or those who are just curious!

It only gets three stars cause Daughter of the Blood (indeed, the whole trilogy) isn't that well written. Bishop overuses phrases(snarly...midnight voice...silvery velvet coated laugh...), her villains are don't have half the brains that god gave a turnip, and the men in her novels seem to have neurological issues (the room is always spinning, or their knees go weak, etc.). But GODDAMN, I love these books. It is fluff at it's finest - cotton candy for the brain. Whenever I'm sick or so busy at work that my brain hurts, I choose one of the Black Jewels novels for my wind-down reading. I can't help but love em, despite their many and varied flaws.

The Black Jewel Trilogy is my favorite series hands down. I absolutely love the way Anne Bishop writes and the way her characters relate to one another. That said, not everyone will enjoy a series with such dark and twisted sequences. However, I always enjoyed the balance of violence and kindness so maybe you will too. This book is the opening to this world, and while for some it may be a bit hard to delve into, once you do it's a wonderful read.

Anne Bishop's trilogy is absolutely fantastic. It is sensual, the imagery is vivid, the characters draw you in and you either come to fall deeply in love with them, or loathe them with all your heart. Daemon is the sexiest character in literature I have ever read about, Lucivar comes quite close to that, Jaenelle is a magnificent, lovable, powerful woman/girl (since she is a girl at the beginning of the series), and Saetan is both awe-inspiring and heartwarming, but well deserving of his title as "High Lord of Hell".

This series takes a backwards look at our perceptions of good and evil, and forces you to think about the choices you make, the consequences that have to be paid, and the bonds that spring from these cycles. This series is #1 for me, and I wish everyone would read it.

Read it, read it, READ IT! If you're going to read any book or any series, if you're a fan of fantasy, read this. It's gothic fantasy and has a great twist on things we normally see and good and bad but is so wonderfully written and perfectly addictive. Just, read it!!

Daughter of the Blood, the first book in Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series, alternates between almost gratuitously dark and surprisingly innocent. Several plot elements are clearly NC-17; others would be appropriate for a Disney animated feature. The primary character (although not the protagonist, at least insofar as the story is never told from her point of view), Jaenelle, is an extraordinarily magically powerful prepubescent girl whose family so misread her gifts that they assumes she was only addled in her mind, not extraordinarily gifted, and committed her to what can best be described as a magical mental institution secretly run by perverts (or at least, they'd be called such under most real-life people's moral standards). The characters with whom the point of view rests are some of the most powerful other characters in the book's multiverse, generally the most powerful males in the realms. The Blood are quasi-demonic and their names clearly evoke Christian demonology (Saetan, Daemon, Lucivar, etc.), but their personalities are more human than not. Saetan, for example, despite being the Lord of Hell, is more a feudal duke than a tormentor of the damned, and extremely concerned about the treatment of the little girl who turns his world upside-down receives at the hands of her family. The book is not a complete story (and indeed, ends at quite a cliffhanger, and a dark one, at that). Recommended for open-minded readers over 17.
