 A brilliant novel !!!
It's the novel from which the words "Big brother is watching you" were taken. Although written in 1948, many of the ideas and even practices are still to be seen today. One can find parrallels to the political systems in Egypt, the States and many parts of the world.
I will read it again for sure !

This book is critical now more than ever. The amazing prescience of Orwell is that he is fully capable of writing not just to warn, but accurately predict. The phrase "War is peace" has become especially relevant since Sept. 11, not just because of the wars overseas but also because of the fear that no place is safe in this country. Those rocket bombs might be a terrorist's, or they might be launched by our own government. It's a staggering read that is every bit as necessary now as it was nearly 60 years ago.

That's probably why I read it six times and can't wait for the seventh.

Definitely in my top 10 books ever. Wonderful, evocative and with a strange peace and sadness about the writing. You can feel every second that this is a world you must really struggle to keep hold of any small thing that can make you happy. Great imagination and a classic for good reason. Do not pass up an opportunity to read this book!

I hated it when I read it in eighth grade. However, I went back to it a couple years after and I came to truly enjoy it for many of its qualities.
I was first assigned to read the book and I didn't enjoy it. I then chose to read it again on my own and enjoyed it very much.

I can see now what painstaking effort Orwell went into creating a detailed totailitarian government through the eyes of one man. I can't help but compare it to Brave New World, which have near opposite messages, where 1984 observes that what we hate will destroy us.

Another mandatory HS read. Hated the premise, but am wondering how many cameras it will take before we are there. Especially since everything I do on the web can be tracked. Living on the grid has a lot of benefits and so many areas for abuse by our benevolent overseers

I think this book is getting more and more relevant as time goes on. George Orwell had a good grip on what the future might bring!

The definitive dystopian novel. Orwell tells the story of a world locked in an endless, aimless war between three totalitarian powers. In Oceania, the state Winston Smith is unfortunate enough to live in, every aspect of life is totally controlled by the malevolent Party. Smith sees hope when he falls in love with the rebellious-seeming Julia, but even Smith fails to realise the horror waiting for those who attempt to undermine the vicious, merciless system. Absolutely every piece of dystopian fiction created about 1949 is enormously influenced by this work, and you will be too.

Outstanding book. Social implications of a goverment out of control. "Big Brother" is a term that was pulled from this book and is in every day use still.

Without doubt the best book I have ever read. Every time I re-read it, I find that it is still thoroughly up-to-date, and comments with uncanny accuracy on current political events. Arguably the scariest book I've ever read too, with a paranoid sense of doom throughout - which is well deserved, as the Party know all and see all - and finally, take all. There's no redemption, no joy - Winston tries to fight the machine, and the machine kills him, not by death of the body, but death of his will, his hope.Absolutely essential.

I got bored at the point where it goes on to write the contents of 'the Book', but the rest I enjoyed it. To me it seems that this book has acquired today a different significance from the days it was written, in the sense that through the descriptions of Orwell's future, in additions to what may possibly happen in a eutopian world, we see the past, the post-war days and the socialistic world. At the same time, we realise that the lives of the 'proles' haven't a bit compared with the blogal political situation of socialism vs. capitalism, which would strengthen the message of Orwell.

I really enjoyed this book! I was totally intrigued with not only Winston's story, but also Orwell's analysis of a society in a state of perpetual war and the fear, hatred, and deliberate amnesia that it requires to maintain. I liked how he draws out the power of media, language and propaganda; the parallels between the propaganda of Bush II's regime and that of Big Brother are eerie.
Orwell's blend of suspense, hope and keen political analysis brought me back to this book every night and made me think long after I turned the last page.

I think the influence it had is better than the actual book. It's not horrible, it's just that 75% of it is a description of this horrible dystopia, and the rest is actual story. Still, you'd like to think we as humans would never let something like this happen... or is it the influence of the book that kept something like this from happening? Well, who knows. A classic to be sure, but it didn't age that well. ...As far as "estranged future world" books go, I prefer Brave New World. The people in power in 1984 are just flat out insane, while Brave New World's governing body actually makes some sense.

at first, when I read this book in high school, I thought it was pretty lame, just long and droll. However, I read it again last summer, and I have to admit the book is very deep. First, I think it is an amazing piece criticizing contemporary authoritarianism in his time. Second, the book is an profound warning on the rise and control of authoritarian governments in any age. Third, it speaks eternal truths, such as he who controls the present, controls the past and he who controls the past controls the future or that he who controsl the meaning of the vocabulary controls the debate. Definitely, a must read for any person who loves liberty or has a healthy skepticism for government action.

if i could add more points to rate this book i would gladly have done so. It is a written description of the modern state and its gigantic ability to inflect its authoritarian system over its subjects. This book summerizes volumes of policy making processes which take place in the backseats of the modern states' leaders whether communist or even liberal. Also Orwell's scenario for the new world order with the chinese power rising and the annexation of britain with the united states is extremely insightful.
