Nice book. The story was quite possible.
When I see all the people which written about it there is no point in telling the story all over again.
It quite amazing to which power there is in the control of the media. I´m quite on my own still hope for the society that there will be ever a movement which will not allow the total loss of control to everyone´s privacy and will stand up against it.

Cynical, frightening, overwhelmingly bleak, but an ultimately beautifully spun dystopian novel about the importance and power of the human spirit and human freedom. A must read for absolutely anyone, as its humbling truths apply cross-culturally to all generations, providing poignant and essential messages about the oppressive nature of (any) government, the power of rhetoric to manipulate truth and enslave the mind, and the dangers of succumbing to forces claiming to protect your individuality when, in reality, they seek to dehumanize you in a heartless attempt to push a hidden agenda. Probably the best and most horrific ending to any book i've read, and one that is sure to leave anyone continually reflecting about where we are headed and where we already irreparably are.

Classic Orwell! If you are a true Sci-Fi fan you should read this and his ANIMAL FARM. But when you do just remember, Big Brother is watching...so be careful where you leave this book!

This was cool, a lot better (but every bit as dark) than I expected it to be. Admittedly, I had to watch the film after I read this in order to understand some of what was going on -- I almost wish I had had to read this book for class at some point, because then at least I would be able to readily discuss with others the themes and events I wasn't sure I understood. However, I was able to "get" enough of "1984" to know that I enjoyed it, and to commend Orwell for his originality in creating a creepily believable future.

The name Newspeak is the name George Orwell gave the language, which the rulers in his dystopian novel 1984, had created. The intention with it was to control thinking, to make some ideas impossible to think, including concepts such as good and evil, true and false, beautiful and ugly. In this connection they used concepts such as old-thinking and new-thinking.Today, after having passed 1984, we live in a so-called postmodernistic dystopia, where eternal values such as goodness, truth and beauty fall more and more away – and where we have been invaded by the ideology of relativism, which rulers, in creeping ways, use the same phrases as the rulers in Orwell´s novel, as if they had used it as inspiration.

I read this (and Animal Farm) in high school, and it was definitely a little dark for me. I remember the grayness of Winston's world vividly still. Anyway, I've thought a lot of rereading this and dipping into Orwell's other works, esp. his journalism, during the Bush II era. But my procrastination has outlasted even Bush, so who knows whether I'll ever get around to it now!! I expect to like it (if that's the right word) better the second time around, as a middle-aged watcher of politics.

Besides being impressively written and cleverly composed, this lecture was mainly depressing to me. Not even so much, because it's a depressing text, but rather because it's so well constructed; everything fits, everything makes so much sense in itself, everything could just really happen this way! How frightening! This is no classic science fiction, this is a speculation on how it could turn out to be. And recognizing trends, characters and aims of people we meet every day brings you to the conclusion that this might be more than a fancy idea of a pessimistic author.

a true science-fiction thriller. A classic. It has even been turned into countless cliche's ( "very Orwellian" or "Big Brother is watching."). This is about a society that is completely controlled by Big Brother in which productivity is everything and everyone is expendable.

In 1984, Winston Smith lives in London which is part of the country Oceania. The world is divided into three countries that include the entire globe: Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Oceania is a totalitarian society led by Big Brother, which censors everyone's behavior, even their thoughts. Winston is disgusted with his oppressed life and secretly longs to join the fabled Brotherhood, a supposed group of underground rebels intent on overthrowing the government.

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

George Orwell does it again, another one of my favorite books. He wrote this one around 1945 and even though 1984 was not just like the book the way things are shaping up Orwell was not far off. It is a must read by anyone who is interested in the way the world is headed.

A dark tale of a future all powerful totalitarian state-terror by Orwell. Detailing the domination of the spirit of man by "Big Brother". All is stripped from Wilson by the state. Worth reading in conjunction with Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning". This is a pessimistic view on man and his craving for eutopian ideological politics. Could Wilson have survived Room 101 with his integrity intact? IMO he would need to have had faith in more than the "spirit of man". This faith would have to be in an absolute rock, beyond man's ideology. Tyranny can be overcome by such irresistable forces.

Orwell is brilliant!! The discussion of Newspeak in the Appendix is brilliantly done! The whole book written years before 1984 and yet written as if the narrator is looking back on the year itself! Pure genius on the part of Orwell!! Engaging characters that come to a sad end. But it does well to teach us to avoid indifference and conformity.

I read this in middle school. I didn't really care for it, but I remember the boys in my class all seemed to love it. Very science-fictiony, in a Star Trek kind of way. You know, like something out of the 60's, with Orwell trying to imagine how weird and depraved our society would be in 1984. I read this around 1977 or so. I gave it an extra star for originality, but I wouldn't read it again.

Should be read by everyone as a warning of what we are becoming. Everything is this book has a parallel in the real world. There are so many disturbing similarites that to cover them all in depth would be a rather large essay paper. I suppose one of the most important would be the fact that the Middle East and Africa have beeen turned into perpetual warzones for the convoluted purposes of the great powers. But there are many, many more that a discussion group or classroom could discuss ad nauseum. Overall, the most depressing thing I've ever read.

A story that made the world think - of ancient darkmiddleage times and moderne Big Brother times.. probably generated more fuzz than it could actually have made by its contents but it worked... gave birth to more comics, movies, novels than any other book before its time
