Wow, what a (very long) story. Thought provoking and very depressing. The unabridged version contains a large amount of unnecessary information and ramblings by Hugo, so, in hindsight, I should have gone with the abridged version and save myself some 600 pages of reading.

Definitely the greatest book ever written. Not only does it contain every genre (excluding science fiction....but no one really wants to read that anyway), but each sub-story is perfectly connected to the plot as a whole. Not to mention the entire thing is beautifully written. Greatest love story(ies); greatest war scene; greatest revenge-plot; greatest depiction of the power of forgiveness. What is there not to love? Did I mention it inspired one of the greatest musicals of all time? Can it get any better? Yes: read it again.

Not this edition; the full version, from 20 years ago. My favorite book, ever. I've read it twice and will probably do so again. Outstanding character studies and a real view of French History.

I have read and reread this book, learning something new from it every time (and learning which abridged translations are the best). If you don't know about Les Mis, then you are either under 16 or don't want to know about it. I was 16 when I first read it, and it is one of the books that I believe shaped how I live my life.

Actually read this first in French! Then a second time in English. Preferred it in French, but adored it both.
