We had to read this in middle school, but I don't feel that kids that age understand the satire--it was much more disturbing reading it now as an adult

I just reread Animal Farm for a book club after 25 years. It's easy to see why this book is regarded as one the best books ever written. It's short, but concise. The allegory is simple to decipher, and the message of the book will infuriate and haunt you. Recommended if you want to get pissed off.

Published in 1945, “Animal Farm” is a great satire on the Russian Revolution (1917) and Stalin’s regime afterwards. With a great sense of humour, George Orwell shows the gradual process of corrupting high ideas of the revolution by its leaders.
This book reminds me of an old movie “To Kill the Dragon” in which the catch is: by killing the dragon, the main hero becomes a dragon himself.

Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely-and this is vividly and eloquently proved in Orwell's short novel. "Animal Farm" is a simple fable of great symbolic value, and as Orwell himself explained: "it is the history of a revolution that went wrong". The novel can be seen as the historical analysis of the causes of the failure of communism, or as a mere fairy-tale; in any case it tells a good story that aims to prove that human nature and diversity prevent people from being equal and happy ,or at least equally happy.

I am at loss of words. One of the most insightful stories I read.

It was originally a satire on Stalinist regime of USSR. What happened to Animal farm happened to all republics founded on a Utopian dream. Be it China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, .. you name it.

I've always wanted to read this book, and I'm really glad that I finally did. A gripping black satire of Stalinist Russia and communism in general, George Orwell manages to capture the passion and heat of an era and the greed and corruption of countrymen in the animals and their situation. The ending is a real downer, but symbolic and extremely well done. A must read.

"Animal Farm" by George Orwell is a very frightening story about a bunch of animals who live on a farm and who get fed up with always having to do the farmer's work. One day, the animals drive away the farmer and claim the farm as their own. They immediately set up a sort of government and write compose seven commandments that all the animals on the farm are supposed to live by. The animals' goal is to create a place of fairness and equality for all animals apart from mankind. However, the system eventually collapses and the animals are left in a similar position to the one they had started out with.

The most famous satirical allegory of Soviet totalitarianism. Published in 1945, the book reflects events leading up to and during the Stalin era. Orwell, a democratic socialist, and a member of the Independent Labour Party for many years, was a critic of Joseph Stalin, and was suspicious of Moscow-directed Stalinism after his experiences with the NKVD during the Spanish Civil War.The book was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels and was number 31 on the Modern Library List of Best 20th-Century Novels

They make this a required reading in high school. Because they have an inarguably valid reason for it.

Witty satire of how a perfectly good society could so easily become a Socialist-run society. The metaphor of man and beast being equal is great, and the imagery of (a) “Squealer” changing the rules (or the 7 Commandments) is as funny as it is frighteningly cautionary.

I never read this in school, but wish I had. Take this over shakespear anyday!

I really think of it as a masterpiece that may never be knocked off my top 3 fav books. The simple telling of such a complex ideology can be enguaging to any reader of any age.

The farm animals are approachable and reading it in a day is possible as it's not too long winded! You can't help loving Boxer, there is someone you know who is just like him!

Thinking of it now, both the previous and the current PM (UK) have some visual Pig like qualities...

Not a fan of either of these novels. Orwell was so preachy and needed to be wacked of his soapbox.

For some reason, I was uncomfortable all the way through, knowing that it was more than just a story but rather a critique of communism. Of course, I don't agree with communism, but it was uncomfortable all the same, knowing that it was not simply literature for the sake of writing something, but rather literature for the sake of putting someone (or in this case, an idea) down. Orwell obviously didn't spend much time mapping out the story, for there are some inconsistencies in it, but it manages to make it to the ending (such as it is) without much trouble.

a must read for everyone, I think. Communistic Humanism is not dead and this is a fabulous tale of the human condition simply standing in the way of a humanistic Utopia. If the problem of sin is not addressed, we end up where we began. Excellent for all middleschoolers to supplement history lessons of the 20th century.
a must for all, I think. Orwell captures the human condition so well and shows why the Utopian idea will not work as long as sin is on addressed. Communistic Humanism is not dead and this should be a must read for each middle schooler!!

Good read. The chapters are short, but the story itself is very deep. The ending was somewhat disappointing. Highly recommended. Total read time is just a couple of hours.
