Love the story. Not quite as inspiring in the "set in stone" version instead of oral tradition.

Read in 12th grade High School. Although a difficult read, Beowulf has stayed with me ever since. Anything Beowulf ... I'm drawn too.

I first read this when I was nine years old. At that age, it was very easy to read, maybe even more so that it was written in prose. As an adult, we've been trained to read a certain way, making it a much more difficult read. Do a youngster a favor and give them a copy of Beowulf.

Well, Burton Raffel is my Dad, so I'm partial to him, but this really is the best translation!

A classic??? really??? why??? My very first university paper was written about Beowulf, and it began like this... "Beowulf sucks! I found the book of numbers in the Bible more entertaining than this." My Literature professor thought it was hilarious to actually receive a graded university paper with such an unsophisticated description as "Beowulf sucks", and read my paper to the whole class, but such an inchoate piece of literary chaos is entirely undeserving of a more studious analysis. Yes the book is a thousand years old, but there is no excuse for the horribly underdeveloped plot and random long-winded, vapid tangents by drunk characters with absolutely no bearing on the storyline. The only interesting part of reading this was the practice I got in learning middle English. Although I have the Old English version listed here, I actually read a middle English translation. Had I read the modern English translation, I believe I would have died of boredom. Literally, my heart would have stopped beating from complete and severe uninterest!

I read it in my sophmore year in Highschool, and then I just recently watched the movie and I've got to say, the movie was like crap compared to the book but the book was also very blan in my opinion. However it was short and got to the point quickly, I cannot tell if that is a good thing or bad thing and right now for this particular book I'm torn.

This is the cornerstone of English literature, much like the Iliad paved the way for Western literature. And, like the Iliad, this was an epic poem copied down some time after it's initial writing. Beowulf is a character that develops well, if somewhat shadily drawn. Worth the read, if you haven't done it, but not one of the best books ever written. Its primary value is in what it did for English literature.

Well versed in context. Appalling bad at matter. Nice to read. Well balanced. Purile at plentitudes. Full of the non carnate species. Boring for word. Well versed in tone. Pleasant to hold. Not for reading when your are in the midst of anger. Blonde for you. Black for me. Please do not hold me in your arms anymore because I. Want to hold you in my arms instead of telling Cathy to rack off is what Heathcliff should have said. I can't be bothered being you is what they both should have done instead of being close I want u to be with me forever is where they will be atoning for everything they have done to me for I am not over this book and never will be because I cannot ever ..............................

The beginning of the super hero in western literary culture. A really fascinating book. I read it to my daughter in first grade (with appropriate paraphrasing is parts) and she loved it. A really good story knows no age limit.
