One of my all time favorites. Edith Wharton captures the New England winter so beautifully, and the starkness mirrors the lives of the characters.

Tragically and simply romantic despite its devastating conclusion, this is one of my favorite books of all-time. Nothing terribly exciting happens...there's no big drama or action. It's just a simple story about simple people with feelings that cannot be acted upon. I can't really describe why this book drew me in. On the surface, it's depressing and bleak, but there is a depth to it that is captivating.

I liked it. It's a good book, lots of literary elements, very nicely written, and very easy to read, too. Whether you're looking for something to mull over for a while or just for an easy read, this is a good book to do it with.

This is an American classic. When I first started the book, I was bored out of my mind. I finally got caught up in it about halfway through, and the ending was totally satisfying. It's rather slow paced, but is also a short read. It's not my favorite book ever, but I was pleasantly surprised

Wow. If you want to read what it's like to be in hell, you can read The Inferno or this classic. It's chock-full-o-sexual-symbolism, romance, a wrenching personal conflict, and attempted suicide. Remember that Bryan Adams song "Run to You"? Put that track on repeat and jump in the sleigh... Wholeheartedly reccommend.

I had to read this book for AP English. While incredibly depressing it is amazingly well written. The imagery and symbolism is fantastic. And though there were times where the main character, Ethan, made me incredibly angry I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. It's not necessarily a book I'd pickup on a whim and read, but I would definitely read it again. Also it's short, so it's a quick, yet meaningful, read.

I had to read this book in high school and something about it always stuck with me- I re-read it and I think that the story itself is good but it is the relationships that make this book for me- Who can't relate to Ethan's wife in her depressing state- I know at times in my life I have thought of her when Ive felt passed over, neglected, etc.

Oh how I HATED this book in high school (10th grade) when I was forced to read it by an English teacher who I hated even more than the book. When I saw it as a book on tape a few years ago, I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a try - it was a totally different experience. Symbolism absolutely grabbed me - there was so much I could appreciate in this book as an adult. What were they thinking, force-feeding it to 15 year olds?

Throughout the book I couldn't shake my anger at the protagonist. He was selfish, didn't make any decisions for himself, and didn't do anything that made me like him in the least. Mattie was nothing special; if only Ethan could have seen that. Sure, I appreciated the irony of the ending, but nothing could really reconcile me to the fact that Ethan Frome got on my very last nerve.

This book is a waste of time and paper. I wanted the time I took to read it given back to me. The main character is an annoying, whiny man, who regrets marrying his wife and ends up falling in love with her sister (?) later on in life. Honestly, everything has a price, and HE made his choice. If he's not happy, it's his own doing. I did not enjoy it and that rarely happens.
