please note this review pertains only to 'the kreutzer sonata.' a cynical and caustic view of feminism and marriage. themes are universal and relevant for modern readers. while the subject matter is subject to controversy, i couldn't help but feel that the narrator's vituperative accounting of his jealous rage revealed much more about the character's struggle with sexuality and uncontrolled passions. the advocation of celibacy is attributable more to the narrator's personal disgust, self-loathing, and lack of control than the nature of women, humanity, and the institution of marriage

Life difficulties last week sent me running to the pages of classic Russian literature. And this one sent me to Tolstoy's "The Cossacks." I love the pace of a good Russian story...and this one didn't let me down. I was hooked from the beautiful opening paragraph and felt my reality melt away as I sank into a new one:

"All is quiet in Moscow. The squeak of wheels is seldom heard in the snow-covered street. There are no lights left in the windows and the street lamps have been extinguished. Only the sound of bells, borne over the city from the church towers, suggests the approach of morning. The streets are deserted...An old woman passes by on her way to church, where a few wax candles burn with red light reflected on the gilt mountings of the icons..."

This was a story that illustrates to the reader that no matter how one may long for something different, something fuller, more real-one can still never fully become the other or, more frustratingly, be accepted by that other.

Not a light read, but very well written. Tolstoy seemed a troubled soul and eccentric (it comes through in his characters). Ivan Ilyich lead a life for himself and was slowly dying experiencing a great deal of pain. He then reflects on his life and realized his error. Maybe Tolstoy is saying you should live for others and live well. I find his short stories make me very melancholy. I did read he had a friendship with Gandhi and some of Tolstoy's writtings may have influenced him.

I would recommend this one. Some of my Chinese friends find this as an excellent and interesting introduction to some basic Christian teachings.

The death of Ivan Ilyich is one of my favorite books. It captures the essence of the human experience in death. It is kind of depressing but an amazing read, especially if you don't want to read a 1000 page work by Tolstoy as it is only something like 78 pages long :)
