This was a good book that I never read in Junior High or High School. I read it with one of my seventh grade classes and was impressed with how they were able to analyze what was happening with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is interesting to note how Dr. Jekyll enjoys the freedom of Mr. Hyde, yet doesn't really take responsibility for the actions of Mr. Hyde. He reaps the benefits, but avoids the penalties.

Although I already knew what happens in this tale, I found it a gripping read and the climax very effective. I enjoyed the quaint Victorian language and moral values.

The weather updates to be found throughout the narrative feature colourful metaphors and similes that I hadn't seen before. This book would be useful reading for anyone who would like to make conversation with people as obsessed with climatic conditions as Robert Louis Stevenson clearly was. It'd be a good book for a flight to the UK.

There are several printings of this book available. I really like the cover art of this one, and it's cheap and well-made. I'm happy with my choice.

Despite what the description here says, there are not any illustrated historical notes in this book.

I have read this book N number of times, and everytime I read it I like it even more. Its amazing how Stevenson has used the characters so effectively to show the good and bad side of every human and we can draw parellelism to the constant duel that we fight everyday with our evil twin and how its not always that the good twin prevails. Great Classic, can pick it up anytime and read.

Not so much a disturbing story, as much as it is a brief exploration into the dichotomies of the human psyche. In the case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is the opposing natures of hedonism and virtue. When reading this book, I got excited about the infinite variations available to this theme. If it were somehow possible to split oneself into two very distinct aspects of one's personality, what aspects would one split? I think I'd divide my industrious and leisurely natures in twain, in order that one version could go to work and prosper, whilst the other could simply indulge in the benefits. Actually, come to think of it, that sounds like some people's idea of a good marriage!

The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is undisputedly a classic but my favourite story in this book was The Bodysnatcher which I read in a sitting, O'Lalla didn't do it for me personally but I appreciate that it was the first concept that attempted to create what we now know as the vampire

This story, no matter how old it is, resonates even today. The idea of the self being seperated into two halves is profoundly interesting and also one of the most genuinely frightening (note to self: do not read during power outage at night...) I thought at times the writing was a little dry, but for its time very innovative. Also, I think I would have enjoyed the story better if I did not already know that Jekyll and Hyde were the same person when I read it. It sort of ruined the surprise, but since our culture has adopted this classic everywhere, I couldn't avoid already knowing. Highly recommended

This book is all about atmosphere. From the fog-covered streets of London to the strange, blood-chilling effect of those who clap eyes on Mr Hyde. Just as RLS's Treasure Island inspired a thousand pirate adventures, this book was one of the most influential in shaping some of the classic horror films of the past.
Amidst the contemporary horror scene it may not seem shocking or brutal enough to register, especially if you merely skim over the text, but this is one to be enjoyed in a darkened room while the wind howls outside. Let your imagination roam and RLS's prose will do the rest.

Oh ya, like this one. This has been made into countless tv, movie and dramas, but reading it trumps them all. Description of the transformation is great. The dastardly deeds may seem small my today's standards, but it doesn't matter, its the evil within that makes you think and wonder about your own actions. Good read.

Another example of a classic story that has influenced popular culture enormously and that I 'knew' yet had yet to read the original. I am glad that I finally did as it is a fascinating early horror story which the excellent annotations by the editor help to fit in with contemporary late 19th century scientific thinking about criminality, psychopathology and psychological development. Much shorter than I imagined it to be, 'Jekyll and Hyde' kept me engrossed throughout. The other two short stories in the collection are less appealing.

Interesting and classic tale of the duality of good and evil that dwells in all of us. Reads a bit like a detective's case file and is often cited as a precursor to modern mystery tales. Definitely recommended to see where various cultural influences came from (such as a well known Sylvester and Tweety cartoon).

Note on this edition, if you've never read the novel before, don't read the introduction before reading the novel itself since it contains several spoilers.

The distiguished physician must really have mixed up quite the brew of potion in the evenings. It turned him from a respectable Scotch Presbyterian into a bloke going out late at night to have fun. As a dignified doctor of medicine, no wonder that when having to listen to the pontificating platitudes of a Liberal politician, he went ahead and beat him to death.

Remember a radio program discussing this book or maybe just the author and several of his works but it related that he had a feverish illness and a vivid dream came to him. He set it down quickly and this story was born and like Frakenstein and also Alice in Wonderland this stories details are part of our modern culture although it may feelvaguely familiar as you read it is worth sticking it out and reading the entire book to get the story as it was originally written.

I loved this book and so did my 12 year old son, the dichotomy of our human struggle of being both drawn to the light and to depravity, the internal struggle that we all battle with is brought out and explored in a disturbing yet truly engaging way. The conversations I had with my son about humanity that were spawned from his reading the book have been some of the best discussions we have ever had, and that alone makes for a great book, even if the content is hard to swallow!

Really good book dealing with one's shadow and the expulsion of the shadow. The only issues it has is that the author never says what Mr. Hyde looks like, nor what his impulses are. I think keeping that secret has lead to the longevity and success of the story, however, the story itself would have been stronger if the reader knew what this evil nature of dr. Jekyll, personified as Hyde, really is.

A short and enjoyable story. The original view taken on the story was pre-Freudian. But I would take a Freudian view of Jekyll and Hyde. Jekyll has urges that simply can not be contained, so he in the process brings Mr. Hyde to the outer world by means of a chemical mixture. I enjoyed it, but I must say I was surprised that the formula makes Hyde smaller. My view must have been distorted from modern cinema such as Van Hellsing.

But this is a nice undercurrent in the Victorian era.

An interesting story to read in 2010 when I've seen so many movie versions that barely used the actual story as their theme. Told as a recollection of events past, the suspense and intrigue covers the majority of the pages, with a final explanation of Dr Jekyll's true activities at the very last.

Robert Louis Stevensons novels are always dark(which obviously i love) plus very well written,if you like him you will also like Edgar Allan Poe,who also wrote on the dark side too.

And self published his first poetry book,"Tamerlane and other poems" in 1827.

Finally, I'm done with it! I assumed that like many books, one just had to get past the beginning but that was not the case. It took much effort on my part to get myself to finish reading it the whole way through. Not to say that it was a bad book or a bad story. Its a classic and I normally enjoy them but for a story that so many already know the twist to, its hard to fully appreciate it. Although I did enjoy the Gothic atmosphere of it.

The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a very fascinating one. It reveals the good and evil side of human nature.

Dr. Jekyll, the main character, is a practical, well-meaning and honorable professor. Mr. Hyde is a gadabout and rowdy fellow who loved excitement. However, both of them are the same person.

Jekyll had two sides in nature; one good and one bad and he fantasized about creating two separate people. So he brewed a potion and drank it. To his amazement, he was transformed to a smaller and younger person. His new look was horrendous and he was ten times more wicked. Dr. Jekyll calls his transformed self Mr. Hyde.

Dr Jekyll frequently drank the potion so that he could enjoy all the excitement as Mr Hyde. Unfortunately, he woke up one night to find that he was Hyde even without drinking the potion. Once, he could not control his other self and committed a murder outside in the streets. From then on, he would transform into Hyde without any notice. Though he tried to create the original potion but was unsuccessful. Testing his potion many times made him very ill and eventually took his toll.
