Moving tale of the moral and spiritual evolution of a lonely weaver in rural 18th century England. Religious criticism and social commentary is cleverly woven into the storyline

My first novel for Geroge Eliot, and I enjoyed it very very much. I didn't think I'd actually like it, but it was definitely interesting, and I'm definitely waiting to read more for George Eliot.

Eliot treats the age-old theme of love=redemption with ballsy originality in this riveting tale. The character of Silas was Eliot's own favourite creation. Read this book and you'll see why. Here's a passage from the novel:

"In old days there were angels who came and took men by the hand and led them away from the city of destruction. We see no white-winged angels now. But yet men are lead away from threatening destruction: a hand is put into their's, which leads them forth gently towards a calm and bright land, so that they look no more backward; and the hand may be a little child's."
