Ah Coriolanus. I had forgotten all about this play, but we read it for Philosophy of Justice in Antiquity. I'm not sure it's one of Shakespeare's stronger plays, but it does resonate with our modern world.

I usually love Shakespeare, but this play isn't as good as the other ones. The style is still really interesting but the symbols are really weird and it's difficult to identify with any of the characters.

Certainly one of Shakepeare's most underated pieces. Symbolism is obvious, but the concept and theme is still profound.

This play can be a tangle, but it has some great political language if you're willing to slug through its density. Shakespeare's language and syntax get complex even for him, and the plotlines aren't as immediately accessible to the modern reader as in more popular plays, but there's certainly still a great deal of worth to be found here. I'd recommend this for readers already well familiar with Shakespeare -- this isn't one to start out with if you're not comfortable picking apart the language.

I am envious of the reviewer that saw this play performed!! If you're like the rest of us, then you will be reading copytext and hopefully a well annotated one. This is a dense play but it is still very readable. There isn't a lot that goes on and understanding it centers on the psychology of the main character who suffers from several freudian complexes and a confusion of his instincts for war and love. There are aspects of this play are flawed...like the quick alliance and disintegration of Aufidius and Martius (did Aufidius mean to play Martius from the beginning??) and the overly abrupt ending but this play should be read for the interesting psychology of the main character and the class relations (note: they are based on Elizabethan class relations not Roman Republican and should be read in that light).
