One of my favorite Shakespeare plays! I enjoyed it quite a bit more than Henry IV.

In my opinion, "Antony and Cleopatra" was not one of the best tragic romance plays that Shakespeare has ever written. I expected a lot more depth from the characters but I was fairly disappointed. Perhaps it's because I am kind of prejudice against the characters. Take Antony for example. He is suppose to be this great leader of Rome but because of his love for Cleopatra, he foolishly enter a self destructive war against Caesar. Then he goes and kills himself when he thinks Cleopatra is dead. Which is something I don't understand considering Cleopatra betrayed him IN THE MIDDLE OF WAR! As for Cleopatra, I am confused if she ever loved Antony or if he was just her "man of the hour" during that time. Even though a lot of people say she really did love Antony, then my question to those people is why did she betray him? And why pretend to kill yourself and have your servant lie to him that the last thing you said was his name? I think that is pretty cruel.

I just didn't believe in the passionate love between the main characters and I think that really made this play very frustrating for me to read. I honestly would suggest other plays by Shakespeare like "Romeo and Juliet" and "Othello" before I suggest this one.

Fall of the last Greek ruler. Heard enough of that history already. But I wonder what is Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra about. More of a tragic love story or history?
