A fun alternate history type of thriller set in Russia. Good book for taking to the cabin or beach.

For anyone interested in Russia, Archangel is an essential novel. Historian Fluke Kelso goes on the hunt for a near-mythical artefact - a notebook belonging to the tyrant Josef Stalin himself. Separated from his fellow academics, with only a prostitute and a relentless American journalist for his allies, Kelso discovers that there are forces at work who don't want the past buried - and don't share his horror at the crimes of Stalin. Harris does an amazing job of depicting modern Moscow in a hauntingly realistic way, and the plot rattles along relentlessly towards a surprising conclusion. Riveting stuff.

After Pompeii and Fatherland, I was slightly disappointed by Archangel but it still has the qualities of believability, historical relevance and "can't put down"able!!!

Russia frightens the shit out of me .... the descriptive nature of Moscow and also the Russian wilderness hammers that home. Stalin, not a pussycat was he. Great book, love it when you get a story with a bit of history thrown in.

Archangel is a historical fiction set in a post Stalin Russia. The times are changing, the world is seeking progress but the Russian people still long for Stalin's return. Their longing might not entirely be in vain. This was a fun read; I recommend Fatherland over this but it is a nice follow-up if you're a Robert Harris enthusiast.

I couldn't finish this one. For somebody who knows much more Russian history than I do, it might be fascinating. But, for me, much of the detail, especially the detail about which street things were occurring on, was unnecessary and just irritating. May try it again before taking it back to the library. Got it because it was written by Robert Harris, but I must say, I prefer Imperium

I really enjoyed this book. I don't normally read thrillers so have nothing to compare it to but this one had me captivated. I could really feel the danger. I don't know anything about Russian history and this book gave me my first insights into communist Russia. Although the ending of the book is incredulous - I really enjoyed the story!

Typische Harris, verrassende wendingen en een spannende finale... Veel bijgeleerd over Rusland... Na drie Harris boeken op rij is het nu wel echt tijd voor iets anders....

Another of those "we've got Hitler's head fozen" novels like Ubermorgen. This time it was Uncle Joe Stalin who allegedly impregnated his housekeeper. The offspring has been kept on ice in the Taiga near to Archangel, and his discovery is set to form a focus for nationalist Russians. Yeah! That's what I thought, too, lol.

A good read. The first part of the book contains a lot of accurate historical detail. Harris also skilfully describes modern-day Russia, especially Moscow. The characters in the book are excellently constructed by Harris. The plot gathers momentum towards the end of the book and the final section seems a bit rushed. Nevertheless, well worth reading, although my obsession with the Stalinist era might make me a little biased!

I was bought this by someone who knew I liked Silence of the Lambs - the wrong Harris!!! It was OK - good for a train journey - bit far-fetched - I think the film was better.
