I was prepared for this book to be phenomenal, and it SUCKED. I was hoping it would continue the momentum built by Obsidian Butterfly, and it fell flat. It SHOULD have been great, with a war between the shapechangers. This book only had one good point, and that is the introduction of some of the Were-Rat mercs. Hamilton should create a breakaway series dealing with the Were-Rat mercs, instead of the terrible way she has been taking this series. This book is a major disapointment, and yet is still better than most of the subsequent novels in this series.

This book is.....interesting. It basically jumps right into the whole Jean Claude and Richard ordeal. Then you get introduced to Micah and his wereleopards. This storyline is so jam packed with love interests, emotional injuries, physical injuries, gun fights, bonding, etc. I like that Anita continues to be the Nimir-ra, I was worried about that one and I like the role she has taken. The Arduer definitely makes up for some interestingly steamy scenes and I enjoyed that Nathaniel is included more in this book. All in all I was quite impressed with the balance of lust and blood in this book. Hamilton seems to be lightening the load off of the kill, kill, kill and adding a little bit of a lustful side to her stories. Richard gets his panties in a twist again, that's kinda getting old, but hey what can you do? I really enjoyed this read but you can tell her books are starting to slide into a female audience. Being a female I got no problem with that at all. This book is a good read.

Despite being highly recommended by Jayne Ann Krentz and J.D. Robb, Laurell K. Hamilton's heroine Anita Blake just weirds me out. I dig her characterisation and LOL one-liners, but what's with the convoluted plot??? I do like paranormal, but cant take body parts being chopped off and inter-species (were-leopard, were-hyena, even snake men) S&M. Need to read sth sweet & wholesome after this!

WOW is all I can say!! I have no idea where Laurell Hamilton gets her ideas for her story lines, but damn them keep getting wilder and wilder!! Yet they make sense for the characters to keep developing, so it works!! I'm half way through the series, which is kind of scary, since this is book 10!! In this one book Anita gets "infected" and is waiting to see if she turns at the full moon. She also marries the marks to Jean Claude. Which gives her some very interesting side effects that are very HIM!!

Wow! A whole lot of weirdness going on in this book. I give it 5 stars not because it was great literature, but because I simply couldn't stop reading. Hamilton has a wicked imagination in her writing, and I'm not sure I'd want to be in her head when she dreams at night. Too much weirdness for me. And yet - as weird as the whole thing was - the characters are likable and I enjoyed the craziness

Someone referred to Hamilton and her books as "batshitcrazy," and I'm not sure I can think of any better way to describe them. That one word/phrase pretty much covers it and says it all. It's a pretty apt description of this book and it's plot. And yet - as I said - I couldn't put it down.

The least favourite of this franchise so far, with much too much preternatural politics and a distinct lack of killer instinct actions that I have come to expect from the principal character.

More trashy vamp-lycan B-grade drivel from Hamilton. Her formula was fun for a while (maybe throughout the first five or six books) but by now it's wearing on the nerves. Just like in every other Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novel, Anita

1. Spends endless pages antagonizing about whether or not to screw the men(monsters?) in her life. She either does this in her mind, or worse, out loud.

2. Turns into a raging sex mad nymphomaniac at the drop of a hat regardless of her soulful moralizing, screwing strangers and old flames alike - then gets away with it by blaming the 'ardeur', before going back to Step 1; repeat Steps 1-2 ad infinitum.

3. Gains even more power, though by now you would think she's strong enough to rule the galaxy. She can heal, raise the dead (a whole cemetery-ful of them without a blood sacrifice), enslave vampires, cause a mystical being to bleed just by waving her arm around vigorously, absorb other vampirean powers such as the ability to read vampire thoughts, and a whole host of other weird and wonderful things. Oh yes, did I mention she can now send anyone writhing in fits of orgasmic ecstasy anywhere, anytime just by a simple touch? Very Merovingian-from-The-Matrix-in-the-famous-restaurant-scene.

4. Solves another stupid mystery involving, as usual, monsters killing people, and Anita getting to blow holes in them with her Browning.

5. Wears slutty clothes.

6. Has orgies. Including an exceptionally explicit scene involving her, Richard and Jean-Claude, having mad sex in order to become a true triumverate, or something - maybe tricumverate is more accurate,

and,

7. Faces the usual blah blah discrimination at her workplace and has to prove herself by waving her gun around like she would a penis if she had one, to show she can play with the big boys.

Sigh! Anita's complexes and inner angst are almost annoying as one of their major causes - the implausible number of sex partners she has. Hamilton has explained in public that Anita's promiscuity was written in supposedly as a statement against the fact that men can traditionally have sex with a whole bunch of different women and get away with it. But I'm increasingly confused with her approach, which seems to exploit Anita's gender in order to jumble together a haphazard and contradictory message. Is promiscuity fine or not? Anita's sexual habits and Hamilton's words seem to suggest that it's fine. But Anita's guilt, as well as the jealousy, rage and hurt that surrounds her choices suggest otherwise.

Furthermore, Hamilton suggests that Anita's promiscuity rebels against male licentiousness without consequences. But does it really? Or does it instead justify licentiousness in both sexes, while at the same time condemning it, since it royally screws up (no pun intended) Anita's life? Add to this the fact that monogamy is the modern societal norm which both men and women are generally held to, and one finds oneself wondering if Hamilton is getting away with Anita's improbable, mile-a-minute sex life simply because she is female. After all, one would frown far more heavily on an author that had a male protagonist engage in such promiscuous behavior with four or five different women in the same novel, and public opinion would surely hold that such a book would demean women. Witness the recent attempt to intellectualize and romanticize the attraction between Bond and Vesper in Casino Royale, such that Vesper isn't just another piece of booty.

If men can no longer get away with such actions, why should women? Is Hamilton's "statement" simply an opportunistic instance of hypocrisy that preys on society's tendency to view a woman as a sexual creature? In that case, is Hamilton actually objectifying women or empowering them? The line is awfully thin!

Other pet peeves with Narcissus in Chains lie with the Orbit Books edition that I read, in which typographical errors and spelling and grammar mistakes abound. How can any self-respecting author allow a book of hers to be publish that spells "deity" as "diety" over and over again? It's offensive.

I read, and may continue to read the Anita Blake novels because I like stories about fantasy, horror and power-packed action. Dry humour is also a plus, though Anita's one-liners are becoming predictable. If you're a die-hard fan looking for more of the same old same old, fine. But don't look here if you're expecting a stunningly original or even particularly well-written novel. Narcissus in Chains is unwieldy, unevenly-paced, sometimes draggy, and frequently downright annoying.

At the beginning of the series I was really into it. But then I realized that the main character was just the author's version of herself. Thus she can't help but succumb to all of her wildest fantasies on page and ruin any sort of good storylines she had in the beginning. It is tedious now in these later novels and I haven't even read the latest one. She harps on the same bs in every novel and it gets old fast. Hamilton must be doing something right though-- because I read all of her other books in the series up to this one.

This book marks the official beginning of the end of the series for me. In Narcissus, we are introduced to the arduer, a cheap plot thread to enable the main character to have sex with multiple partners. ANd also the destruction of one of my favorite characters, Richard.

Other people seem to have summed up all my feelings on this book already, but I'm not even sure why I'm still reading this tripe.

The books just keep getting worse and worse, and at this point, I'm not sure why the publishers are still letting her crank out new ones, other than the fact that plenty of people do read this trash and love it. I guess that's fine for them, but it really, really is not my cup of tea. I started on this one because Obsidian Butterfly was actually half decent, and I really love Edward. But then this one was back to where Blue Moon had left off and took it to new levels of miserable and awkward. Great, Anita has Jean-Claude's incubus now and fucks around. How utterly charming. If I wanted that and not the same pseudo-moralistic zombie-queen from the first few books, I'd probably just be reading dime store romance.

How much worse do the rest of the books get? I still have Cerulean Sins sitting on the shelf from before I knew how bad these books were going to get. I don't think I'll be picking up any of the later ones unless someone can assure me that we get some sort of shred of the old Anita back.

Haha, if i thought Anita was a hoe before... i apologise! Its funny to see this hypocritical prude become a leapord and a slut in the same night, but its like i almost prefer the endless vampire battles. Sorry, but lycanthropes just arent that interesting, so i'll just skim through all these parts trying to convince me that richard is attractive. Shang da looking pretty good though

I love this series, it does keep getting stranger and less believable, but I didn't chose a non-fiction book, so I got what I expected. Always interested to see how things are going to get stranger! The mindless sex, well that can be a bonus if you are into that!
