Seriously, this should have been a popcorn series I devoured. It's got all the elements: Supernatural critters, bad early 90s fashion, a weirdly-chosen milieu (St. Louis? Rilly?), but I could not bring myself to enjoy anything about this series. Reasons: The bad fashion is SO bad, even for the time. The voice is practically indistinguishable from that of Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum series) and the Sue Grafton Alphabet series (Kinsey Millhone), both of which are kind of wearing. But I think the worst thing about a series that is basically about good and evil and the gray spots in between is that there isn't really a sense of good or evil or gray. There's just a kind of set of rules and situations where supernatural rules are broken you're supposed to inject your own suppositions on. This is to say, there is a depth problem. This should be chick lit with a twist that lifts it above its genre, but instead, it's just chick lit with supernatural tones.

Well in my opinion this second installment in the Anita Blake series was much better than the first. I feel like I understand Anita better now. This novel focuses more on her job as an Animator than as her role as a vampire executioner. In the beginning she turns down an animation job (payment: a cool million) because the job involves sacrificing a human's life, something she is not willing to do. (Yeah she has morals and cannot be bought!) She is also helping the police department's Spook Squad to figure out who or what is responsible for the gruesome deaths of innocent families. She confronts a powerful voodoo priestess in hopes that she can shed some light on these murders, but ends up making a new very dangerous enemy. And with all this she is still struggling with her complicated relationship with the vampire Jean Claude. (I do like that he is sort of her sidekick in this one). Very creepy and suspenseful....I love that I am reading this around the time of Halloween. Perfectly spooky! :)

The 2nd book in the Anita Blake series sees Anita turning down an animation job that would be profitable, but would need a bigger sacrafice than she's willing make. She's also working with the police's Spook Squad to help determine who/what might be resposible for a grisly murder scene. She visits a powerful & dangerous vaundan priestess in hopes of getting help with the case as a missing child's life may be on the line. And, of course, she is dealing with Jean Claude and all that being marked by him entails.

This installment is a bit better than the first or perhaps I'm just getting more interested in Anita and her adventures. Keep reading --- they keep getting better and better.

I love the character development in this book. Anita finding out more about herself and her powers. Also love the way new supernatural creatures and people are introduced into the storyline.
