Laurell K.Hamilton is fantastic. Guilty Pleasures was such a fun read. I loved Anita and her personality. She's a fireball of a woman, who is smart,sarcastic,kick-a,and beautiful.Anita's sarcasm and humor are completley hilarious and so contagious that you can't but help to laugh out loud;even if you'll look like a total dork. The suspense and action was just right and not to over powering and the hints of sensuality weren't over bearing as well.it had just the right elements of everything a good, and well written book should have. And not to mention completley GOREGEOUS vampires;even the weird, crazy ones. Its a fantastic start to such an interesting and fantastic series!I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

There are quite a few books in this series, so they must get better. I wasn't overly impressed with this first one and probably won't read any more.

DIdnt expect much from this as I got it on Kindles Bargain bin, yet I was pleasantly surprised.

I LOVE the hero's acerbic wit and kick ass skillz....and that she can sometimes be a dumbass even though she is feared by the worlds vampires and labelled "the Executioner". The writer doesnt take herself too seriously, and can create some serious hotness without pandering unnecessary sex.

I did not pick this book, I asked a young lady working at the local B&N to pick two random science fiction/fantasy books for me. This was one of them.

One of the blurbs stated "R-rated Buffy..." so I figured it was a cross between Buffy and Twilight. I wasn't too far off. The main character, for a zombie raising, vampire hunter who hated her coworkers and has very few friends, seems to get attached way to easily to the love interest, a human who seems to be heavily into vampire BDSM. There isn't any sex, although much is hinted at towards various scenes and characters. And the violence is written in graphic detail. I can't find the R rating anywhere in this book.

There are a few twists and turns, but nothing page-turning. Overall it was a decent book to read while I was bored.

I have to agree with Cheryl Hou that the book started out badly. Very badly. I have not read any of her other books yet because I wanted to read them chronologically. The biggest reason I wanted to try the Anita Blake's books were because they were set in St. Louis, which does not happen often. I had to force myself to keep reading at first because Anita Blake is incredibly annoying, the first part of the book is chaotic and messy and silly, we really are not given the chance to care about any of the characters, Anita is still very annoying...and the entire book just seemed to be heading in a really bad direction.

It did get better, though, and as I got closer to the end, I actually cared a little about how it would all go down. I've just picked up the next two books, more out of curiosity than anything, but I don't think I'll be able to stomach much more. Kelley Armstrong and Charlaine Harris, and even MaryJanice Davidson (*wince*) do a much better job of writing about the Supes.

I originally picked up the hardback trade paper (comic) of this story, also written by the original sotry's auther, Laurell K. Hamilton. I was quickly drawn into the story line and sad that my graphic novel covered only the first half of the book, meaning, I went out and bought the paperback (and the next 3 in the series as well). While my previous vampire novel experience is with Anne Rice, this sucked me in faster and deeper than Lestat ever did. I like the world she created, where vampires have the same legal rights as the living, making it a more interesting scenario where the vampires are given the freedom to move without as much fear of a hunter coming for them. It also makes it interesting where the living people are concerned as to legal rights. Anita (the protagonist) hates vampires, but animates undead (raises zombies) for a living as well as works with the police as their specialist on cases. It is well worth a read.

Well. I'd made the mistake of picking up one of Laurell K. Hamilton's later Anita Blake books and reading it first. I had to stop halfway because to be frank, it "sucked". It really, really *sucked*. I couldn't believe people were paying money for that garbage. But many of my friends insisted that the first few books of the series were actually quite good and not so wish fulfillment-esque. So I read the first book.

... it wasn't bad. In fact, it was a much better scale than her later books. But I still couldn't love it. =( In this world, vampires and lycanthropes and all the supernatural live side by side in wary acceptance. As long as one doesn't try to cross to the other. That's actually a bit interesting. A bit.

Vampire fiction is overdone and often overwrought. I think the times of Buffy and Anne Rice are over; I just couldn't bring myself to care in the least bit about the characters, not even the enigmatic Jean-Claude. And the less said of Anita, perhaps the better. I've skimmed the later books to get a feel of where Hamilton is going with Blake's character and it's not good. Not good at all.

It was disappointing because so many people adore the series and I totally though I'd love it. But alas, that was not to be.

My favorite series of all the hundreds of books I own. I'm a rabid fangirl!
Just the start of a great series. Anita is an overworked, lonely, single, celibate young woman. Surrounded by violence and death all day and night long with no real outlet for her rage, frustrations, and fears she's become more and more introverted. While at a wedding shower, she didn't want to go to in the first place, for one of her only 2 friends, she gets blackmailed into having to solve a mystery of who is killing the highest ranking vamps belonging to the Master of the City of St. Louis. Anita embarks on a journey of fear, pain, death, self discovery, enlightenment, and even empowerment that will change her life and even her prejudices forever.

I think once I stumbled across Anita Blake, the books were really fast paced and also made you want Vampires to be real. I enjoyed them all until it started getting way to heavily into her always ending up having sex with an animal of some sort. I mean I was really excited to see who she would end up with, but I never expected her to turn into a sex fiend weirdo. Don't you thunk for one second that I am bashing her Novels. I still like them, I am just not that much into the whole porno in a book that is all.

Guilty Pleasures introduces a modern world where lycanthropes are news reporters and vampires are lobbying for their rights. At the center of the story is Anita Blake, a woman of many talents who works as an "animator" raising the dead and also as a vampire slayer, executing vampires for the police.

Hamilton dives right into her story without providing adequate backstory for her world. She glosses over the issue of vampires wanting legal rights and proceeds to introduce a handful of crazy, murderous vampires, leaving the reader to wonder why anyone would ever consider lobbying to give them legal protection. There are a lot of interesting questions and stories suggested in this book that are completely skipped over in favor of the main plot, which was probably the least interesting element of the story.

Most of the characters in the book are strangely inconsistent and erratic. The Master Vampire demands that Anita help her solve a mystery and then spends most of the book terrorizing Anita and preventing her from making any headway on the case. The beautiful, selfish bad boys do the uncharacteristic thing of falling for Anita making great sacrifices for her. Even Anita, the seasoned vampire hunter, goes undercover and then has a string of emotional outburst that jeopardize her life.

I have not read any other books in the series. I hope they get better, but I just can't bring myself to take the chance that they're as lousy as this one.

My rating is for the whole Anita Blake series. I really loved all her books until recently. Up until "MICAH", I would have given her a 5 star rating.
Her novels used to have some substance, real page turners. But recently I think her work has become 'trashy'. The Harlequin was the last of her series I read. I'm not too sure if I will be reading her most recent two... I suppose I'll give them a shot, eventually.

I'm on Book 4 of this series, and the only reason I keep buying them is because...well, I don't really know. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment? The informal, stream-of-consciousness writing style bothers me, and the heroine says or does something to irk me at least once per chapter. Maybe it's because I want to see if we learn something about Jean-Claude other than the fact that he's got a taste for antiquated clothing and owns everything up to and including your face.

Though I gather that in later books the author can't get enough of them, I haven't come across a sex scene yet, although there is quite a lot of very detailed gore. I have a feeling I won't be getting that far, though.

Totally not literature, but also totally a guilty pleasure. Got this in a omnibus from the Science Fiction Book Club many years ago, and have followed the series ever since. The series has evolved over the last 18 years from mystery/horror to near pornographic eroticism. But at this point, I'm invested in the character.

This book draws you into the world and style of Anita Blake from penguins to black Nikes. Starting out simple enough its well understood how this book is perfectly "peachy keen" with its flair for drama and hint of sex playing throughout.
Enjoyable, laughable but with an invested interest of things to come.

It is the little things in life that add value to the greater things in life so to speak...Laurel K Hamilton's writing is compelling because of her focus on the little things. Her heroine is an interesting combination of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Nancy Drew and Dirty Harry's cool ballsy female assistant from The Enforcer (Kate Moore). One flaw...I nearly gave up my disbelief when the wererats were thrown in, but if you ignore them its an interesting world she creates. I would not only recommend it, I am going to try out some more of Anita's adventures :)

 A quick Review:

A friend had recommended this book to me quite sometime ago and i was hesitant to give it a go thinking it would be a Mills and boon romance vampire novel. Well last week i saw it on the shelf and thougt ok i will give it a go read the first one if its no good then its not too much of a waste.

I start reading it for just a chapter and then after 6 chapters had gotten past i was interested in the story and wanted to know more. The central Characters are solid and at the end of the book i was keen to buy the next one. I say give it a read the blurb on the back is ok but doesn't do it full justice.

In this story we are introduce to Anita Blake a zombie raiser and vampire executioner. We are also introduced to Jean Claude a vampire, who is attracted to her and not in the blood sucking way either (well mostly). With the vampires getting killed Anita is forced to solve the mystery. Not only vampires and humans are out there but a killer as well who is trying to kill her, but the question is which one is it or is there something more...and will she give in to Jean Claude or not you'll have to read to find out.

I am a fan of vampire novels. After reading the Twilight books, the Sookie Stackhouse series, and the House of Night series, a friend of mine told me about the Anita Blake novels so I decided to give it a go.
After reading Guilty Pleasures, I still don't feel 100% captivated. It was definitely entertaining. I like the main character-Anita Blake, an animator ( she raises the dead) and a legal vampire executioner. She is small but tough as nails and has a sharp sarcastic sense of humor. There is lots of supernatural elements here (ghouls, zombies, were-animals). In this first book Anita takes down a master vampire and appears to be marked by the replacement, Jean Claude. I am going to continue on in the series as I hear that it gets better.

I'm a huge fan of Charlaine Harris and the Sookie Stackhouse novels and in that circle of fans, I kept hearing about the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. I read Guilty Pleasures, the first book in the series and thought it was "okay." I did find the characters and story interesting enough that figured I'd give the series a chance, but with no sense of urgency.

A month or two later, I got the next book and it was a bit better. Then came the 3rd book, etc... The books keep getting better and better. I'm ravenously reading them as fast as I get get my hands on them.

*I've heard that some of the later books get a bit crazy and fans are lost because of heavy use of sex, etc... *

I'll let you know when I get there. For now, my recommendation is that this series is well worth the read.

In the first book we are introduced to Anita Blake--- a feisty, tough as nails animatior and legal vampire executioner who may be diminutive in size, but not in spirit or power. Anita is proof that good things do come in small packages. This book also introduces you to some other characters who like Anita you will grow to love/appreciate more with each book.

Happy Reading.

I finally finished this one!!! It was recommended to me because I liked True Blood, Twilight, Queen Betsy, etc...well, this is one series I will not be reading.

There were a number of different characters that were added with no real development. I felt the main character to be bland.

This is supposedly the 1st book in the series but I felt that there was a lot of information missing; I felt that I had missed the previous books.

VERY disappointing!!!

This has got to be the worst book I've ever read. I only kept going because SO many people have told me how good it is. But any writer who uses the words "kinda," "tireder," and, "good morning to you to," needs a lesson in English and a better editor. The plot is decent but the main character is not likeable. The cliches are killing me and the tough bitch attitude has GOT to go. I'm surprised the book didn't start with, "It was a dark and stormy night..."

I'm told it gets much better further along in the series so I'm going to brave the second book soon. I respect the opinions of the many people who have recommended it so I'll have to give them the benefit of the doubt and keep going... but it's painful.

This review is for the series mostly...the first 8 books are well written and interesting...after that I wouldn't recommend them to anyone let alone friends. Turns in to how much power can I get if I screw another vampire, werewolf, wereleopard, whatever I come into contact with...the plot lines start to lack definition and the mystery is pretty much non-existent...but the first 8 are awesome mystery/horror/action novels.

The best book in the Anita Blake series, they all went downhill from here. This hooked me firmly, and I kept up with the series hoping that the later books would return to the quality of the first but was ultimately profoundly disappointed. This book combined the mystery of crime with supernatural elements and a very feisty and interesting heroine. I realize that Ms. Hamilton does not respect the readers that complain about her writing style---which is a shame, because if her later books held even a half of the quality of the first ones I would still be a devoted reader. Ah, well, the good side of this is that I have found other authors who are quality writers, but I do have to admit that I wish that Anita Blake's story would have continued at the level at which it was started.

Classic (any book before OB) LKH books are great reads, and GP was a good start to a promising series. It's unfortunate that it took such a foul dive into really bad pointless porn starting with NiC. The series ends for me with book 9, so that said, GP was a good starting point with introducing the characters and Anita's world. I didn't much care for Anita at first, but she grew on me over the course of the first book and I feel she really developed a lot more in book 2, The Laughing Corpse. For fans of vampires, slayers and various were-creatures, I recommend the books prior to book 9. After that...it's all downhill and a huge disappointment for the Anita fans who enjoyed plotlines.
