This is book nine in the Anita Blake series, and I really loved this one. In this one Anita goes to New Mexico and gets to see where Edward lives, and gets to see inside Edward's life. Anita doesn't like what she see's and is torn, but she owes a debt and is determined to pay it back. In the process it almost gets her killed. This could be the biggest test of her life, with her guards up against her "boys" her powers are weakened, will she be able to survive this "monster" she has to go against? In the process she has to make some decisions about Edward and her "boys".

Learning more about Edward was a great spin on this series...I really enjoyed reading about the personal relationship b/w Anita and Edward. However, I do think I appreciated his cynical, dangerous side more when I did not 'see' his softer side and the attachment that he has towards Anita. It will be interesting to watch their relationship progress in the next few books in this series. Love, hate or friendship? Definitely added more questions for future books.

One of my favorite books of the series, cause it is all with Edward and none of the other guys in her life. The characters that surround Edward's life are fantasic. You really get to see who Edward is in this book. You get to see that he does show emotion and he considers Anita one of his only friends and his equal. This is a book like her earlier work, not so much romance as action, blood and gore, and mystery. Jean Claude and Richard are barely mentioned in the book which allows the reader to concentrate on the storyline that surrounds Edward. Hamilton dedicated the book to all of Edward's fans and she truly did not disappoint. An A+ read!

Even though this is still a must read in the Anita Blake series, I must admit it is not one of my favorites. I'll be totally honest though it is because I missed Richard and Jean-Claude. I guess Like Anita, you need to read this book to really understand how much we care and love them too. :) It was cool to see and learn more about Edward and his world.

Pros: The series is wild and entertaining. This book is great because it centers on the "Edward" character. He's everyone's favorite hitman.

Cons: After this book, or maybe after the next one, depending on how much of it you can take, these books get, er, weird. We're talking S/M, graphic sex, gender power-struggles, and long drawn out romantic fights. Anita starts sleeping with everyone she sees. It soon becomes clear that the author is living out her fantasies with these books and Anita is a Mary Sue. After this book, the writing deteriorates beyond enjoyment. And they make me blush.

But I recommend this book and the ones before it whole-heartedly. After that, read the wikipedia summaries to see what becomes of the characters.

Well Edward was the enigma I always have seen him to be. But Anitas running away from Richard and JC..to get her head clear is so much crap the world could gag about it. Now we find out she is not only short but FAT.. a 13/14 is a totally big size for a 5'1 girl. So here we got this overweight, nasty tude chick, who doesnt have a clue about dressing and the author puts her in short short skirts? oh lord..please say she has grannie panties on... and she is now running around naked.. she is a good girl only in print.. she is such a HO, with an always ready and present excuse to ho it out if it is NEEDED.. come on author we arent that stupid..

I hope both jc and richard kill her and get those marks off them. she is just no a good person.. a liar, a cheat, screws men for whatever reason.. who cares abotu Anita.. no one thats been in our reading group. They do like the guys around the group and some of the other women. Not the way Anita kills some, and not others she has a line ya kno

Definitely my favourite in the Anita Blake series thus far. To be fair, however, I love Edward, he's a fascinating character.

To anyone who hasn't read the Anita Blake series, but is a fan of horror, I say please give the books a try. I always shied away from the series because there were so many books, I thought it was just some crap some hack was pumping out to take advantage of the popularity of horror books.

Turns out I was only partly right.

In actuality, the books were being pumped out by a talented writer with the ability to weave fascinating characters who - gasp - actually develop and mature from story to story. Characters that are affected by the morality of their actions.

In short, depth.

Imagine my most pleasant surprise.

Give them a try. Laurell Hamilton is what Anne Rice could have become if it hadn't been for an incurable case of heterohomophilia.

If only these weren't quite so gory. I really had a hard time with the nursery scene. Other than that, I can't seem to get enough. Must read other books before I can order the next one.

Great Book... Great Series! Anita Blake Vampire Hunter!Great Book... Great Series! This is the 9th book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series. I love them all! This book finally gives us insite into Edward. He has been one of my favorite characters throughout this series. Anita is becoming more & more like him! Anita has proven herself to Edward but still needs to prove herself to every one else {as usual} including the authorities in New Mexico. Laurell Hamilton keeps her readers guessing by writing such unpredictable storylines with very unusual characters. They are all so addictive. Anita gets involved in a strange serial murder investigation, complete with sexually disfigured and flayed bodies. This book will keep you guessing...What Next! I could NOT put it down!

This book was not of my taste. I am not enough of an Edward's fan to read an entire (very lengthy) book about him and his problems. I got to maybe page 150, and started reading the next book in the series. I just wasn't that interested in that particular book. That book almost made me rethink reading any more of her books. I just wasn't all that happy with this one.

I'm not a fan of her style of writing - it seemed every paragraph was the same sentence re-worded over & over. Her character's sense of self-worth was a little annoying. and the sexual undertone of everything that was bloody and gross was unnecessary and disgusting.

In my eyes the best Anita Blake book out there. Steers away from the background of Richard and Jean-Claude and sticks to the action with Edward. Rich in fantastically wierd Meso-American mythology and some of the truly wierdest scenes in Anita Blake to date, with some pretty chilling stuff in it as well. Introduces some of Edwards backup, and hopefully we will see more of these characters in new books (some of them returning for the Harlequin of course). Edward is such a dark character and sorely needed this book to come out and really let us get to know 'Death'.Great stuff, if you havn't allready read it then go out and get it!

When I first picked up the book, I thought my god it's huge! The book is much longer than the others in the Anita Blake series, not that this deterred me in the least I devoured this book as I do all by Laurell Hamilton, I am now a devoted fan.

Even though the book is very long, it is still not long enough and through parts of the book I flicked back to see if I missed pages as some parts let you assume things happened that Laurell would normally let you experience. That is the only gripe I have about this book :)

Many Laurell Hamilton fans are dismayed by the overt sexuality and amount of sex in the novels. I am not one of these fans, I think the sexuality is fabulous and along with the violence and gore makes all her novels oage turners and keeos the pace on the extreme dial. In this book however there is no gratuous sex scenes so many fans will be gratified with that.

This book takes a look in to Edward, who Anita always hopes she will never become. He is the scariest "person" she knows which is saying a lot espeically with her group of BDSM friends :)

Edward, Anita and recruits are hunting down the most gruesome monster I have ever met on my reading travels. The Murders are disgustingly gruesome and I said "Ewwww!" a lot out loud while reading this novel, but I loved it! I would not recommend it for anyone with a weak constitution.

Not my favourite Anita Blake book, though probably the one that affected me the most. I really missed Richard and Jean Claude in this novel though and will be happy to get back to them in my next reading :)
