My kids & grandkids are my excuse for reading this, but no one should need an excuse, it's just plain fun with words. Even if you don't carry it outside of the house, it's a fun book to read to yourself as bedtime stories.

I have been reading these charming stories aloud to my younger siblings. As always, Kipling's playful wit, charm and way with language is a pure delight. The stories simply beg to be read aloud! With skill and surprisingly imaginative insight, these stories tell of "The High-and-Far-off-Times," when the world was "so new and all." It is certain these simple home-spun tales will captivate children (and appreciative adults) of all ages with their refreshing blend of fancy and good common sense. A most important component in the repetoire of classic English children's literature in the same tradition of (and equally on par with) Winnie-the-Pooh and The Wind in the Willows.

Interesting to see Malaya is mentioned plus some Malay & Arabic words used differently than their real meaning.

Sexist. Racist. But, the stories were written before those concepts existed, so, for the 19th century, pretty normal stuff. Just don't read any of the stories to your kids today.

This is a wonderful book. Kipling is one of my favorite authors for children. Even though its written for kids, adults will be thoroughly entertained. When I had 3 kids at home ranging from ages 3-14, they would beg me to read this to them. The writing is so funny that reading it aloud only adds to the hilarity. It was hard to read it aloud because we'd all be in tears from laughing so much during it. Absolutely love it and will treasure it always.
